Penguin Service Center

The Penguin Service Center is a single place to receive essential information, find guidance, and resolve enrollment-related concerns in the areas of financial aid, records and registration, and student billing. Office of the Dean of Students

The Office of the Dean of Students (DOS) exists as a centralized point of contact to discuss extenuating situations and concerns that you may have, particularly those related to mental and physical health, hospitalization, food, and housing insecurities, challenging family situations, issues with faculty or staff, and any other barriers that may be impeding your success. Contact a case manager, e-mail dos@ysu.edu, or submit a Penguin of Concern Referral Form for yourself or another student you are concerned about and a DOS staff member will reach out promptly.  DOS also hosts a site of Frequently Used Campus and Community Resources that may be useful.

Reciprocal responsibilities for Undergraduate Students and Instructors

A positive learning environment involves a commitment of both instructor and students in a course. Reciprocal Responsibilities for Undergraduate Students and Instructors was developed jointly with the Student Government Association and YSU Academic Senate to outline mutual responsibilities in the classroom.

Academic Support 

 

Maag Library 

Maag Library provides students access to both print and electronic resources, as well as a variety of other services and facilities to meet your needs:

  • Textbooks: Maag offers textbooks for select courses for 3-hour checkout.
  • Research Help: Ways to request help, research guides, tutorials, and more.
  • Curriculum Resource Center (Beeghly Hall): Children's literature, kits, games, puppets, manipulatives, and books for education majors and student teachers.
  • Study Spaces: Reference lab, individual/group/family study, exam rooms, podcast rooms, Maag Cafe, fit bikes, and more.
  • Items to Checkout: Maag has more than books - medical models, exercise equipment, games, tools, video cameras, dry erase markers, phone chargers, and more.

 

Tutoring, Academic Coaching & Accessibility Services

  • Who: Resch Academic Success Center
  • What: Academic Coaching, Accessibility Services, and Tutoring in over 200 courses 
  • When: By appointment both in-person and remotely.  Monday – Thursday 8:00am – 5:00pm and Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm 
  • Where: Kilcawley Center West (near the Dunkin Donut entrance) 

 

Math Tutoring & Support

  • Who: Math Achievement Center
  • What: In-person drop-in study sessions. Tutor-guided study groups and support for improving math placement available by request. Textbooks, calculators, and computer workstations are available by appointment. Online assistance is provided through tutor.com and is available through your Blackboard course.   
  • When: (Fall and Spring Semesters) Monday-Thursday 9 am-6 pm and Friday 9 am-3 pm. Visit our website YSU MAC for extended online hours or for more information about our services. 
  • Where: Cafaro Hall, room 408

 

Writing Tutoring & Support  

  • Who: Writing Center
  • What: Writing consultations for any discipline, Basic computer literacy
  • When: Monday-Thursday 9 am-5 pm, Friday 10 am-1 pm (Appts. or walk-ins), Sunday 4-7 pm (Online, synchronous appts.) 
  • Where: Maag Library, Lower Level, Room 171 

 

World Languages Tutoring & Support

  • Who: Language Learning Resource Center
  • What: Linguistics tutoring, Tutoring for world languages  
  • When: Monday-Thursday 8am-8pm, Friday 8am-3pm (Appts. or walk-ins)
  • Where: DeBartolo Hall, room 558

Mental Health Services


Student Counseling Services: As a student, you may experience a variety of concerns that can impede your academic success, such as anxiety, depression, relationship issues, difficulty concentrating and/or lack of motivation, and alcohol/drug problems. These mental health concerns or life stressors may lead to diminished academic performance or reduce your ability to participate fully in life. Services are available to assist you with addressing these and other concerns you may be experiencing.  Contact Student Counseling Services (330-941-3737) to learn more about the confidential mental health services available to our currently enrolled students.

Community Counseling Clinic: The Community Counseling Clinic is a training clinic for students enrolled in the master of counseling program at YSU. The Clinic’s services are provided free of charge to those who live in surrounding communities. To find out if they can help you, or to schedule an appointment, give them a call at 330-941-3056. Physical Health Services


Wick Primary CareWick Primary Care is available to meet your basic health needs. Several services are offered for free (included in your health fee).  

Student Recreation Center: Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center is free for you to use, and offers a variety of activities. Visit the Campus Rec website for more information.

Dental Hygiene Clinic: The Dental Hygiene Clinic is located in Cushwa Hall. They provide some dental services, and the clinic is staffed by students in our very own Dental Hygiene program! If you are interested, you can find more information here.

Penguin Pantry: The Penguin Pantry (food pantry) is available for free for your use. Visit the Penguin Pantry website for updated hours and procedures for food pick-up.  

Student Security Services: Are you looking for assistance walking to and from classes on campus? Or has a recent injury caused you to need transportation to and from class? Student Security Services can help! For more information call them at 330-941-1515.


Technology Support 


IT Service Desk

The IT Service Desk offers 24/7 phone support for first-level technical issues you may have, including support for your computer, software, printers, smartphones, and tablets. Call the IT Service desk at 330-941-1595. Find out more about the IT Service Desk.

Computer Labs

Computer lab locations with YSU computers and software are spread across campus. Additionally, Bring Your Own Device labs can be found in the Lincoln building, Beeghly Hall, DeBartolo Hall, Butler Museum, Bliss Beecher Hall, and Maag Library. Students can additionally rent computers and/or print at these locations.

Business Attire

Business Attire is available through the Penguin Pantry (run by the Office of the Dean of Students). It is open to all YSU students in need of professional attire for internships, clinicals, student teaching, award banquets, presentations, and job interviews. For more information, email dos@ysu.edu or come to 3325 Cushwa Hall during business hours.

Handshake

Handshake is the home to over 200k employers from a wide variety of career fields. It offers you the ability to upload a resume and apply for various open job/ internship openings. Every current student at YSU already has an account set up; just use your YSU login credentials. Find out more from the Office of Career Exploration & Development.

Lactation Rooms 

Lactation rooms are offered in various places across campus (Beeghly 200A, Cushwa Hall 2504, Maag Library 147). If you are a first-time user, you are encouraged to contact Ryan McNicholas from Campus Rec to schedule a tour. You can reach him at 330-941-2207 or ramcnicholas@ysu.edu. 

Family Room 

A family room is available in the lower level of Maag Library in room #143. This room provides parents with a great place to study and look after their children. Children-friendly furniture, toys, books, and technology will be provided. If you are interested, you can find more information here.
