Guidelines for Planning Fun, Safe, and Effective Parties

Planning a Party?

The Student Activities Office has prepared the following guidelines to assist in your preparations. Planning any party is no small undertaking. Part of your considerations should be given to crowd control, your neighbor’s rights, state/local laws and university regulations. The following guidelines will help you to prevent negative outcomes from your party.

  1. Prepare a guest list prior to the party. Do not allow admittance to any one who is not on the guest list or a member of the organization.

  2. Designate a sober control/party monitoring committee to oversee the party’s activities. Make sure they are knowledgeable about risk management procedures and are in control and respected by party goers.

  3. Make sure intoxicated individuals have a safe way home or spend the night.

  4. Provide party identification. Wristbands are highly preferred compared to hand stamps or markers.

  5. Restrict party goers to your own property.

  6. Contact University Police at least one week prior to the party and inform them of your activity.

  7. Consider hiring off-duty police officers or security guards for safety.

  8. Learn and follow state laws regarding service and/or sale of alcohol.

  9. Never serve or allow minors to consume alcohol at the party.

  10. Serve alternative beverages and food.

  11. Establish a reasonable ending time for the party and stick to it.

  12. Inform your neighbors well in advance that you are planning a party (announce date, time, person responsible and precautions taken to ensure safety.)

  13. If admission is charged or donations accepted, be sure to obtain the proper F-permit from the Ohio Department of Liquor Control (applications available in Student Activities).

  14. Have Fun! Designate a party theme and plan theme-oriented activities.

  15. Alcohol should never be the focus of a party.

  16. Consult your Student Activities advisors as they may have great ideas and can help with the success of your party.
