Working closely with academic departments, EHS inspects STEM laboratories to achieve & maintain compliance with the University Chemical Hygiene Plan, as mandated by OSHA. Problem areas are discussed with department leadership and corrective action is then taken to bring deficient areas back into compliance. In addition, EHS routinely tests fume hoods on campus to ensure they are performing according to acceptable standards.

The department also serves as the campus reference on chemical safety, by maintaining a chemical inventory system and safety data sheet (SDS) library for hazardous chemicals stored on campus. All information concerning the University's chemical inventory is shared with local emergency responders. EOHS also oversees the University's Chemical Management Center, assuring that YSU properly orders, receives and stores all laboratory chemicals on campus.
