Requests to Return Title IV Funds to Lender

Once Title IV funds (also referred to as financial aid funds) have been posted to your account balance or processed as a refund, you may still cancel or return a portion of the funds if you choose to do so.

If a refund has not been processed yet:

Please contact the Penguin Service Center as soon as possible for your next steps.

If you have received a refund:

Refund check: Return the refund check in person or via mail to the Cashier's Window. Please sign and write "Return to Lender" on the check stub with the date and amount to be returned.

Direct deposit refund: You write a check to Youngstown State University with the refund amount you would like to return. Please include "Return to Lender" with your YSU ID number in the memo section.

If it is a personal check, it will be held for 14 days before processing until it is cleared with the bank. For faster processing, you can submit a bank check, cashier's check, or money order to the Cashier's Window.

You can also complete a Loan Change Form to reduce or cancel a portion of your loans. Once processed, this may generate a balance on your Penguin Portal account that you can repay with the refund amount.

Once the refund is returned, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will return the requested amount to the lender.
