Frequently Asked Questions - Form 1098-T

What is a 1098-T?

A 1098-T form is an IRS form that is provided by the University to assist students and parents in determining whether or not they might be eligible for education tax credits.

The 1098-T is available by January 31st for the previous fiscal year.

What are Education Tax Credits?

Various types of tax credits are available, including the Lifetime Learning Credit and the American Opportunity Tax Credit. The information on the 1098-T can help determine if you are eligible for any additional tax credits.

The University Bursar and Penguin Service Center is not permitted to offer tax advice or assistance to students or parents. For additional information on your potential tax credit eligibility, please contact an income tax professional.

What is reported on the 1098-T?

Per IRS regulations, an institution may elect to report payments received for qualified tuition and expenses in Box 1 or the amount that each student was billed in Box 2.

YSU reports amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses in Box 2. In Box 5, YSU is required to report the amount of scholarships and grants that were processed as payments on students' accounts.

For additional information on 1098-T reporting and qualified tuition and related expenses, please visit Instructions for Forms 1098-E and 1098-T | IRS  (external link).

Why didn't I receive a 1098-t?

If you have not received 1908-T by February 2nd, it's possible that you may fall into an "exception" group.

Students can be exempt from receiving a 1098-T for the following and are not required to file a 1098-T:

  • Qualified tuition and related expenses are entirely waived or paid by scholarships and grants
  •  Qualified tuition and related expenses are paid entirely by a government entity (ex. Department of Veterans Affairs).
  • Courses for which no academic credit is offered, even if the student is otherwise enrolled in a degree program.

For more information on these exemptions, please visit Instructions for Forms 1098-E and 1098-T | IRS  (external link).

If the exceptions are not applicable, your name and/or social security number may not be up to date on your student record.

Please contact the Penguin Service Center for assistance updating your identifying information.

How can I get another copy of my 1098-T?

If you are a current student, you can log into the Penguin Portal to retrieve your 1098-T by following the steps above to view/print. If the form isn't available via the Penguin Portal, please review the exemption reasons above for more information.

If you are a former student and you do not have Penguin Portal access, please contact the Penguin Service Center for assistance retrieving your tax documents.
