Penguin Mates

Since 2013, YSU Magazine has been sharing the love stories of married YSU couples in our popular “Penguin Mates” column. We introduced the couples featured below in the Fall 2018 print edition – you can read about how they met and see all their photos here.


Gary M. Lazor, 1985, BA, Combined Social Studies, and Jeanne Spinosa Lazor, 1986, AB, Accounting, were married June 25, 1988, in Warren. They live in South Bend, Indiana and celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary this year. He is CEO of Lazor Advisory LLC, an international business development and talent acquisition consulting firm, and she is an accounting director for NeoSystems Corp.


Brent Cole, 2016, BE, Electrical Engineering, and Katherine (Pitcairn) Cole, 2016, BS, Environmental Studies, were married Nov. 26, 2016, at First Church of the Nazarene in East Liverpool. She works in an environmental lab, and he is an electrical engineer with GE. They live in Erie, Pa.


John Phillips, 2005, BA, Archeology, and 2010, BSEd, Social Studies, and Jennifer Allen Phillips, 2007, BS, Computer Science, were married Aug. 9, 2008, in Louisville, Ohio. They live in Niles. He is employed by Cerni Motors in Austintown; she is a technical writer for Black Knight Inc. in Sharon, Pa.


Corey Rich, 2006, BS, and 2009, MS, both in Criminal Justice, and Ashley Forbes-Rich, 2014, BS, and 2017, MS, both in Education, were married Aug. 12, 2017, in Youngstown. He is a residential case manager at Daybreak Youth Crisis Shelter in Youngstown; she is an intervention specialist at Stambaugh Charter Academy. They live in Youngstown.


Amanda Sacco Vitello, 2013, BS, and 2015, MS, both in Chemistry, and Marcell Vitello, 2014, BE, Electrical Engineering, were married Sept. 30, 2017, in Warren, and currently live in Cortland. He works as a design engineer for NEXANS Autoelectric of America in Poland, and she is an analytical chemist at Molded Fiber Glass Research Company in Ashtabula. They met at YSU in Spring 2012 in physics class – the only class they actually had together. “We started talking and studying together and just hit it off from there,” Amanda says.


Joyce Brooks, 1961, BSE, and 1970, MS, Early and Middle Childhood Education, and Loran Brooks, both of Canfield, who studied Engineering at YSU, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at Greenfield Village and Inn in Dearborn, Mich., with their children and grandchildren. The Brooks were married June 15, 1958, in the Austintown Community Church and both attended YSU after graduating from Canfield High School. They are life members of the YSU Alumni Society.
