How It All Began
YSU Recycling Program was established in 1999 with the goal of improving waste management and fostering environmental responsibility on a campus level. Initially, the program focused on recycling office paper, aluminum cans, glass, and plastic. Thanks to grant funding from the Moaning County Solid Waste District, YSU was able to expand its recycling efforts and implant more comprehensive waste management practices.
In the years that followed, the program earned national awards from United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The university has become a model for collaboration between local institutions and the Mahoning County Solid Waste District. Through this partnership, YSU benefits from grant-funded resources, while the Solid Waste District receives access materials recycled on campus.
YSU Recycling is grateful for the commitment of our staff, students, and community partners who make this program possible.
Recycling Program's Accomplishments
- 2002: YSU Recycling launched a Dump-and-Run reuse collection during student move-out at the Residence Halls.
- 2003 - 2004: The program was later recognized by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with two national awards.
- 2006: YSU became the first college/university in Ohio to begin composting food waste, setting a new standard for sustainability on campus.
- 2007: Thankfully to Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) grant funding, the food composting program expanded by establishing a compost curing area.
- 2008: In effort to reduce waste, YSU dining services switched to tray-free dining.
Recycling Program’s Goals
- The program aims to recover 70% or more of waste for recycling, reuse, and composting this year.
- We aim to reduce contamination rates by providing clearer recycling instructions.
- Increase campus awareness and involvement with recycling opportunities through promotions and events.
- Extend our environmental education outreach to local schools within the community.
- We strive to keep the YSU campus cleaner and greener every day!
