Bio

Karla A. Wyant, MSSA, LISW-S, is a Senior Lecturer within the Department of Social Work at Youngstown State University (YSU). Born in Youngstown, Ohio, she completed her Bachelor's in Social Work from Youngstown State University in 1998 and then earned her Master's in Social Science Administration (MSSA) at Case Western Reserve University in 2001 with a concentration in Adult Mental Health.

Prior to becoming a full-time faculty member at YSU in 2006, she worked as a Licensed Independent Social Worker in the areas of Hospice, Medical Social Work, Long-Term Care, Residential and Wrap-Around Counseling, School-Based Social Work, and in Juvenile Diversion. Since coming 'home' to YSU, she has taught courses within the Department of Social Work including Integrated Seminar, Capstone Seminar, Field Work, Cultural Diversity, Methods with Communities and Organizations, Methods with Groups, Methods with Individuals, Social Work with the Aged, and Social Work with the Disabled. Also at YSU, she has worked as the BSW Program Coordinator for the Lorain Partnership Program and was a pivotal part of its development since it was created, providing students the opportunity to obtain their BSW degree off-campus closer to home in the Lorain, OH area. In addition, she also has contributed to the Department's ongoing CSWE accreditation and re-affirmation through data collection, assessment, and evaluation of both the BSW and MSW programs, and was tasked with individually writing the Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes section of the 2010 and 2020 BSW self-study report and the 2010 MSW self-study report which was submitted for the re-affirmation process based on this data.

Outside of her passion for teaching and mentoring future social workers, she enjoys spending time outdoors, birding, photography, camping, kayaking, looking for beach glass, golfing, hiking, biking and gardening, as well as spending time with her fur babies, family and friends.
