Alan Tomhave is the Associate Dean for the Beeghly College of Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, and Education and Professor of Philosophy. He has been at YSU since 2009. He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Missouri. His research focuses on applied ethics and political philosophy, with special emphasis on the nature of the state and concepts related to the state (e.g., citizenship). He started the YSU Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl program and was the co-coach for YSU’s 2020 national championship win. He regularly teaches Introduction to Philosophy and Social and Political Philosophy. He has had many students go on to the best graduate and law programs in the country.
Prior to his Ph.D. work, Dr. Tomhave Studied Philosophy at the University of Texas (B.A, 1996) and Eastern Classics at St. John’s College in Santa Fe, NM (M.A., 1997). He also taught English in Korea and Japan for four years.
