I earned my PhD in Political Science from the Claremont Graduate University's acclaimed "Great Books" graduate program in Political Philosophy and American Government. Before joining the faculty at Youngstown State University, I did a post-doctoral teaching and research fellowship in Poland at the Alexis de Tocqueville Center at the University of Łódź. At YSU, I have taught many courses in the subfields of political thought, American institutions, international relations, and Israeli politics. In 2023, I was appointed the Clayman Professor of Jewish Studies and took on the role of director of the YSU Center for Judaic and Holocaust Studies, a program that I was heavily involved with as an advisory committee member under the previous two directors. Having become the Clayman professor, I have worked to reinvent myself as a scholar of Jewish Studies, with respect to my primarily interests and training as a political scientist. I have authored three scholarly books. Two of these are about neoconservatism and the third, just released this summer, is The Armed Jew, which deals with Jewish history, Jewish culture, and Jewish self-defense in the face of escalating anti-Semitism.
While my first two books were on intellectual frameworks of important political movements and their engagement with major American policy questions, my third book took a completely different direction and sought to create conversations about Jewish identity and its implications to Jewish safety. I am currently working on another book about the idea of the "Judeo-Christian tradition." My new project seeks to understand this interfaith concept that many argue (and many deny) is inherent to American political thought, while at the same time exploring whether or not American Jews across the gamut of American Judaism are right to eschew meaning to this tradition.
My teaching career has been as a generalist and as a specialist. I have taught courses in all five of the fields of Political Science: American Politics, Political Theory, International Relations, Comparative Politics, and Public Law. My favorite classes to teach are Israeli Politics and the Political Thought sequence. I am currently co-teaching a class with a retired professor of Philosophy, called "Freedom and Tyranny." In the forthcoming years, I want to do more co-teaching with other colleagues.
