”The proposed Pete Complete program allows students to bundle their books on their tuition bill. Students receive a Welcome email 35 days before classes begin explaining the program. They receive a selection email 30 days before classes begin, asking them to confirm if they want to pick up any print materials or have them delivered. All digital content will be available in Blackboard the first day of class.”
These informative sessions are to share information and gather feedback from stakeholders to determine what is best for the YSU campus. Potential implementation of the program would be fall 2024.

First Day® Complete: The Student Experience video
Pitt Greensburg produced this video, for their book program on campus.
Take the guesswork out of purchasing course materials! Youngstown State University students now have the ability to bundle the cost of materials into their tuition and fees at a flat rate. The program results in a 35% to 50% reduction in cost to students, and ensures they have all of their materials for the semester available to them before the first day of class.
Upon registering for courses, students will be automatically enrolled into the program. Once you've successfully selected your courses, the bookstore will start preparing your order.
Starting 30 days before the first day of classes, you will receive an email to verify your order and select your fulfillment preference.
An email notification will be sent when your order is ready for pickup or when it ships. Your digital materials will be delivered for your course(s) within your school's Learning Management System.
Why does Youngstown State University feel this program will benefit students?
This program is an institution-wide response to the increasing number of students who lack access to required course material due to cost. This program makes getting textbooks easier on students, which will ultimately improve their success at YSU. Pete Complete is estimated to reduce the cost of traditional textbook purchases by an average of 40 to 50% and provide them by the first day of class.
Are there any students not included in the program?
DPT students and students belonging to the Academic Partners are excluded. If an Academic Partners student would like to benefit from the pricing and participate, they can click the opt out link to be added.
If I choose not to participate, how do I opt out?
We encourage students to enjoy deeply discounted and guaranteed course material for the first day of class. We also understand this program may not meet the needs of every student. If you do not wish to participate in the program, *you will need to opt-out every semester.
Opt out date by default is 14 days after classes start. The opt-out page link becomes available when the term is active and you have registered for classes, and will only be available until the first add/drop deadline (6 working days into the semester). The term is active 30 days before classes begin.
To opt out, log into the new Campus Experience Dashboard, access the Opt In/Out page under the menu item “ Student Account” and clicking on the “Pete Complete” link.
What is the deadline for opting out?
The opt out date follows the 100% refund deadlines Reduction/Refund of Fee Charges Upon Withdrawal < Youngstown State University (ysu.edu).
| Length of Course | 100% Refund | No Reduction of Charges |
|---|---|---|
| More than 8 weeks | Through 14th day of term | 15th day of term and later |
| 8 weeks or less | Through 7th day of term | 8th day of term and later |
If I add or drop classes, can I change my decision about participating or opting out?
You can opt out due to class changes or opt back in as long as it is during the time frames detailed above. Keep in mind you will need to return your textbooks if you have already received them prior to opting out. If you drop a class after the first day, you can receive a credit for those course hours when you return your course materials.
What if I never verify my order?
Students will receive emails to remind them to verify their order. All students will get charged unless they opt out whether they verify an order or not.
If I never pick up my books, will I still get charged?
Yes. Unless you opt-out, your materials will be held at the Bookstore and your student account will be charged.
You will receive an email stating which materials, if any, must be returned to the Bookstore and when. Or, visit the Bookstore, and they will “swap” the required textbooks and codes, so that you have what you need.
Can I opt out if I picked up my textbooks?
Yes, you will have 48 hours to return your textbooks. If you do not return the textbooks, the charges for the program will go back onto your student account.
Can I choose to participate for some classes but not others?
This program is designed to be an all-in or all-out solution to bring affordability to campus.
What if I don't want to participate, and I want to buy my textbooks somewhere else?
Opt out date by default is 14 days after classes start.
Who do I contact with questions?
For program questions, please contact the Bookstore by emailing sm8197@bncollege.com or calling (330) 318-3331
What information will be provided to me so I can make an informed decision?
YSU’s Barnes & Noble Bookstore website will provide the level of detail needed for a student to make the best decision for their situation. Additionally, emails reminding students to confirm their selections will show the cost of materials if purchased outside the program.
We are committed to protecting all personal information and take the utmost precautions to secure and store data.
How will my personal information be used?
The data provided to the Bookstore is only used to help us deliver all your course materials based upon your selected courses.
Can the Bookstore sell my personal information to third parties?
No. We are committed to the safeguarding of all personal information.
Why is Youngstown State University partnering with Barnes & Noble?
YSU and Barnes & Noble are both focused on delivering affordable course materials options to our students. Pete Complete is a full-service course material program that delivers a highly personalized experience for students, retains faculty choice of course materials, and delivers deep savings to students. Barnes & Noble is also our contracted bookstore provider; thus, we coordinate all things textbook related with them.
How much will this program cost?
This program will cost a flat fee of $23 per credit hour, regardless of how much each individual textbook would cost if you purchased separately.
Do I pay Youngstown State University or the Bookstore?
This program charge will be included on the students account, along with other charges such as tuition and fees. This allows a student to use Financial Aid, scholarships, etc. to pay for their course materials. Supplies are not included in this program and will need to be purchased separately. If you add extra merchandise upon verifying your order, you will need to pay the Bookstore with a debit or credit card.
If I drop classes, will I receive a refund?
The program will be handled in the same fashion as all other tuition and fees, and refunds will be processed in accordance with existing deadlines and procedures. However, if you pick up your course materials but do not return them within 48 hours of dropping the course, you will owe the cost of the textbook.
How do I pay for textbooks I want to keep?
The student would need to work directly with the Bookstore, and payment will be accepted by the Bookstore. Charges for purchasing a book are not transferred to your student account.
Will I be able to get physical or electronic copies of my materials?
Required course material is provided in the format requested by the faculty. Your bundle could have a mix of physical and digital materials depending on the adopted format. Most physical items aside from lab manuals will be rented.
Will I have access to accessible course materials (e.g., large type)?
We are committed to providing accessible material, and the Bookstore team can help with any special requests. Contact the Bookstore by emailing sm8197@bncollege.com for more information.
What if I need an accessible format due to an impairment or disability?
Students with disabilities who need textbooks in an accessible format should register with Accessibility Services. The Accessibility Services application can be found at the Accessibility Services Registration Form webpage. Accessibility Services will work with faculty, publishers, and the YSU Bookstore to help provide accessible alternative formats to students with qualifying disabilities. What do I do if I have not received my textbooks?
Orders cannot be processed until your order is verified. If you have already verified your order, call the Bookstore at (330) 318-3331 or e-mail at sm8197@bncollege.com. Be sure to provide them your order number, so they can check on the status of your order.
Can I highlight and write in the textbooks I get?
Yes!
What happens if my book is damaged, destroyed or lost?
We know things happen! Contact the Bookstore team to work it out on a case-by-case basis.
What do I do if I am missing a textbook or received the wrong one?
Send a copy of the syllabus to sm8197@bncollege.com. Make sure to include important information in your email such as course name, course section and your contact information.
Do I need to return books if they are for a continuation course?
You will still be required to return continuation course textbooks. You will be issued the same title for the next semester after successful registration of the continuation course.
Is it possible for me to keep a textbook at the end of the semester?
Yes! Students are offered an option to buy the textbook at the end of the semester. Students would work directly with the Bookstore if they wish to purchase.
If so, how much will it cost to keep a textbook?
The rental buyout price is a discounted price based upon the market value of that unique material.
What if I did not receive an email to verify my textbooks and delivery method?
You should receive your first email approximately 30 days before classes begin. If you have not received any emails from B&N, please check your junk/spam folder and make sure you have not blocked emails from @bncollege.com.
If my required course material is digital, what do I need to do?
Digital course materials do not require you to select a fulfillment preference. Your digital materials will be available in the University's LMS (Blackboard) by the first day of class. At that time, you will also receive an email about your digital materials.
Do I still need to order my books on the Bookstore website?
No. Please use the link included in the Pete Complete confirmation emails to verify and reserve your books.
If I change my schedule, will I get the updated materials?
Within 24-48 hours of the schedule change you will get an email prompting you to confirm the new materials (if a physical print book) or the items will be available in Blackboard. You will be asked to return any print materials for the dropped course.
