YSU to host vintage base ball game Sept. 19 at Mill Creek Park

Youngstown State University will host a vintage baseball game Sept. 19 at Volney Rogers Field in Mill Creek Park. As part of YSU’s America 250 celebration, the event will begin at noon with a Base Ball Q & A session with the Akron Black Stockings, followed by a demo game. The Penguin team will take the field at 1:30 p.m. and face-off against the Akron Black Stockings using 19th-century rules and customs.

The event is free and open to the public.

Vintage base ball is played according to the Vintage Base Ball Association rules. Adopted from the mid-to late-1800s, they reflect how the game was played during its early development. Players wear period uniforms and follow historic gameplay, offering spectators a look at the sport’s origins.

The event is designed to provide a family-friendly experience while highlighting the history and evolution of baseball. Spectators will have the opportunity to interact with players and learn more about the traditions of vintage baseball.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.
