YSU Department of Art announces lineup of events for the week of November 18

On Monday, Nov. 18, the Youngstown State University Department of Art will present its Freshmen Portfolio Review Showcase. Freshmen art students are required to complete a Freshman Seminar and Portfolio Review course, in which they learn about being a creative professional and strategies for critical thinking, writing and research skills. The course culminates with the public showcase, fostering community engagement and giving art students the chance to receive feedback on their work.

The showcase will be held on Bliss Hall’s fourth floor from noon – 2 p.m.

Also on Monday, the 2024-25 Department of Art Lecture Series will continue as it welcomes guest artist Erin Mallea for a studio visit and lecture.

Mallea is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the past and present of microcosms as entry points into larger human and environmental conditions. Her work is supported by her place-based research and partnerships with biologists, historians, environmental justice activists and more.

Mallea will hold studio visits from 1 – 3:30 p.m. in the McDonough Museum of Art, with a lecture to follow at 5:30 p.m. in the museum’s lecture hall (room 3000).

The week will conclude with the opening and reception of the Fall 2024 Graduating B.F.A. Exhibition on Friday, Nov. 22.
