YSU Staff Recognition Week: Monday, May 9, 7:30 a.m., Staff Recognition Breakfast in the lobby of Tod Hall;
Wednesday, May 11. Annual Staff Recognition Awards Dinner in the Chestnut Room, Kilcawley Center. Reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m.;
Thursday, May 12, 4 p.m. Staff Recognition Happy Hour Reception at the Fifth Floor in downtown Youngstown.
Tuesday and Thursday, May 10 and 12. YSU will be the site of a large-scale emergency response exercise involving dozens of federal, state and local first-responders. The exercise will be restricted to two areas on campus:
- Tuesday, May 10, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Moser Hall, including Schwebel Auditorium; Lincoln Avenue on the south side of Moser Hall, between Fifth Avenue and Elm Street; and the F2 parking lot along Fifth Avenue next to Beeghly Hall. The exercise is expected to include up to 100 participants.
- Thursday, May 12, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Three rooms in Bliss Hall; the parking lot along Audubon Street behind University Courtyard Apartments in Smoky Hollow; and Harrison Field in Smoky Hollow. There will be up to 50 participants.
The university will remain open. Business will be conducted as usual. The training focuses on preparedness for a terrorist attack, possibly including weapons of mass destruction that involves mass casualties. There will be a significant presence of emergency vehicles and uniformed first-responders in these two areas of campus on these days.

Wednesday, May 11, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sixteen teams of high school students from seven local schools build and race their cardboard canoes in the 12
th Annual Penguin Regatta in Beeghly Center at YSU. Schools with teams in the competition include Chaney STEM-Engineering, Chaney STEM-IT, Chaney VPA, Choffin Career and Technical Center, Lowellville High School, Springfield Local High School, Struthers High School, West Branch High School and Mahoning County High School.
Friday, May 13, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. YSU baseball plays at twin-bill vs. Valparaiso at Eastwood Field in Niles. The Penguins also hit the diamond for a home game against rival Kent State
11 a.m. Tuesday, May 17.
Friday, May 13. Roger and Gloria Jones of Youngstown, founders of Fireline Inc., receive YSU’s 2016 Friend of the University Award at an invitation-only event in Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown.
