Hispanic Heritage Month events
The Youngstown State University Latino Student Organization and the Hispanic Heritage Planning Committee through the YSU Office of Student Diversity Programs has partnered with the community to celebrate the 2018 Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.
This year’s theme is “Courageous Latinos Working United to Build a Great Nation.” For more information, call 330-941-1692.

Thursday, Sept. 13, 12:15 p.m., Opening Ceremony, Mahoning County Courthouse, Rotunda, Youngstown, featuring a flag ceremony representing 22 Hispanic countries as well as a musical performance. Friday, Sept. 14, 6 p.m., Centofanti Symposium with Tim Wise, prominent anti-racist writer and educator, in YSU Kilcawley Center, Chestnut Room. Free and open to the public. Wise is the author of seven books, including "Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America," has lectured internationally, and has trained corporate, government, entertainment, media, law enforcement, military and medical industry professionals on methods for dismantling racism. Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2 p.m. “Importance of Spanish Language Acquisition,” in YSU Jones Hall, Lariccia Family Intercultural Collaboratory. Spanish is the second-most spoken language in the United States and the dominant language in many of neighboring countries. A rising number of employers prefer individuals who are bilingual and can speak Spanish fluently. A panel of speakers, including study abroad students and professors. Thursday, Sept. 20, 4 p.m., Opening of the “Life While You Wait” exhibit, YSU Bliss Hall, Judith Rae Solomon Gallery. The exhibit runs through Oct. 5. The work of internationally recognized artist Gaby Berglund Cardenas of Ecuador addresses the human condition, the female body, and the realm of spirituality in work spanning mediums from paintings and printmaking to installation, textiles, and artistic books.
