Center for Nonprofit Leadership receives internship grant

2017 Nonprofit Leadership Summer Honors Internship Program participating studentsThe Center for Nonprofit Leadership at Youngstown State University, housed in the Williamson College of Business Administration, was awarded a $65,000 grant from the Raymond John Wean Foundation to implement the 2017 Nonprofit Leadership Summer Honors Internship Program.

The program offers full-time (40 hours per week), 12-week paid internships designed to provide 10 qualified YSU students with career-related work experience in a nonprofit or public sector organization. The internship program runs May 15 to Aug. 4. This is fourth time YSU has offered the internships.

“This program aims to provide meaningful, career-related experience to YSU students, which in turn fosters and develops their leadership skills to serve as effective leaders in the public and nonprofit employment sectors upon graduation,” said Laura Dewberry, director, Center for Nonprofit Leadership. “The program also benefits the host organizations by building capacity as the students work on projects that help increase the impact made in the organizations’ important community work.”

The following students and organizations will participate:

  • The Boys & Girls Club of Youngstown hired Mollie Crowe, an undergraduate senior studying Advertising/Public Relations and Nonprofit Leadership, for the Marketing & Special Events Intern position.
  • Eastern Ohio Education Partnership hired Georgia Kasamias, an undergraduate senior studying English and Spanish, for the Communications Intern position.
  • Junior Achievement hired Justin Vinkler, an undergraduate senior studying Business Management, for the I Can Save Program Intern position.
  • Mahoning County Land Bank hired Amanda Irwin, an undergraduate senior studying Marketing Management and Nonprofit Leadership, for the Marketing and Public Relations Intern position.
  • Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities hired Bruno Serrano, an undergraduate senior studying Information Technology, for the Social Media and Web Intern position.
  • Meridian HealthCare hired Emily Young, an undergraduate senior studying Business Administration and Nonprofit Leadership, for the Marketing and Development Intern position.
  • Northeast Ohio Adoption Services hired Kristen Day, an undergraduate senior studying Advertising/Public Relations and Nonprofit Leadership, for the Marketing and Special Event Intern position.
  • Trumbull County Engineer hired Danny Marker, III, an undergraduate senior studying Civil Engineering Technology, for the Engineering Intern position.
  • United Way – Trumbull County hired Stephanie Marsico, an undergraduate senior studying Marketing Management and Nonprofit Leadership, for the Campaign and Special Event Intern position.
  • Youngstown Area Jewish Federation hired Rita Beish, an undergraduate senior studying Human Resource Management and Nonprofit Leadership, for the Human Resources Intern position.

All selected students are current YSU students and have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.

All organizations selected to participate as employers in the program have a mission and/or programs that fall under one of the four Raymond John Wean Foundation Issue Priorities, which are: Community Revitalization, Economic Opportunity, Educational Opportunities, and Public Service Leadership. The Center for Nonprofit Leadership offers a certificate and a minor in Nonprofit Leadership, which can be combined with any major on campus.
