Wondering if STEM summer camps at the Williamson Innovation Park are a good fit for your 5th-8th grader? Below is more detailed information about what we'll be doing at each camp (all tentative and subject to change; more to come!).
June 8 - 12 | STEM Spark
For students with a broad interest in STEM who want to learn more. STEM Spark will utilize hands-on activities based in the scientific method and engineering design process.
Field Trips: Humtown (Manufacturing/3D Printing Facility) and Clover Recycling
Guest Speakers: Mahoning County Soil and Water, YSU GIS Program (google earth and mapping)
Highlight Activities: STEM Playbook (connecting students to STEM through sports), Critical Ops Drone Workshop
June 22 - 26 | Aviation Adventures
If you have a student who is constantly staring off into the sky, this camp may be for them! We'll explore the academic foundations of flight, the impact of weather in aviation, and a variety of related industries with a focus on rockets, drones, and airplanes.
Field Trip: Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics Youngstown Branch Campus
Guest Speakers: Austintown Fire Chief (drones as first-responders), OhWOW EduTainers indoor drone lesson, local meteorologist
Highlight Activities: Highlight Activities: STEM Playbook (connecting students to STEM through sports), Critical Ops Drone Mission Planning Workshop, kite flying
July 6 - 10 | Eco Explorers
Nature and outdoor lovers will thrive in this camp, focused on environmental appreciation, protection, and sustainability. Topics include the rock cycle, green houses, pollinators (including our own pollinator garden) and tree identification.
Field Trips: YSU Mineral Museum
Guest Speakers: YSU Chemical Engineering (geothermal energy), YSU Recycling Team
Highlight Activities: STEM Playbook (connecting students to STEM through sports), activity with Mahoning County Soil and Water
July 20 - 24 | Wireless Communication (Beginner)
This camp will inspire a love of radio for those who have no experience, and encourage a continued exploration for those who already have an interest. A more technical camp, this one is recommended for students who have a definite STEM interest and want to learn more about wireless and radio communication.
Field Trips: TBD
Guest Speakers: Frank Sole and Anthony Luscre are our local amateur radio enthusiasts who will share their passion with our campers throughout the week
Highlight Activities: Learn morse code and build a working telegraph; attempt contacting the International Space Station
August 3 - 7 | Wireless Communication (Advanced)
Our wireless campers from last summer were so hooked that they wanted to know how to go deeper, so this year we are adding an advanced level camp for those who participated in Wireless Camp in 2025 or who are participating in the Beginner Camp this summer.
Field Trips: TBD
Guest Speakers: In addition to Frank and Anthony, we will welcome Dr. Dan Keown from the Dana School of Music (sound and audio synthesis)
