YSU to host Dr. Rana Awdish for lecture on compassionate care in healthcare

Youngstown State University will host an evening with Dr. Rana Awdish, a nationally recognized pulmonary and critical care physician and author, 6 to 7 p.m., Thursday, April 23 in the Recital Hall of Bliss Hall.

The event, titled “An Evening with Dr. Rana Awdish: Rehumanizing Healthcare,” is free and open to the public.

Awdish is the author of “In Shock", a critically acclaimed memoir based on her own experience as a critically ill patient. Her work has helped reshape how healthcare professionals approach communication, empathy and the human experience in medicine.

During the event, Awdish will share insights on patient care, resilience and the importance of human connection in healthcare settings. Her perspective, shaped by both her clinical expertise and personal experience, has made her a leading voice in compassionate care.

Awdish serves as director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Program and medical director of care experience at Henry Ford Hospital, where she focuses on integrating compassionate communication and narrative medicine into clinical practice. Her writing has appeared in publications including The New England Journal of Medicine, Harvard Business Review and The Washington Post.

Following the lecture, a book signing will be held, with pre-sales available for her latest book, “After Shock.”
