Paula Kacir of Lowellville completed 100 hours of volunteer service at the United Way and, under the program, received a tuition waiver for either YSU or Eastern Gateway Community College. Mrs. Kacir is using the three-credit waiver for her grandson, YSU freshman Michael Kacir.
Under the program, led by the Ohio Department of Higher Education and piloted at YSU and Eastern Gateway, the schools award a tuition waiver for three credit hours to the recipient of choice after an area resident aged 60 or older spends 100 hours volunteering at a local organization.
The news conference at the Youngstown Historical Center of Labor and Industry included remarks from YSU President Jim Tressel, Kathy Mock of United Way of Youngstown and Mahoning Valley, and John Carey, chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education
