YSU faculty, student and alumnus featured on national geriatric podcast

A faculty member, student and recent graduate from Youngstown State University were recently featured on a national podcast focused on improving care for older adults.

Shannon Dudash, assistant professor in Graduate Studies in Health Rehabilitation Sciences; Theresa Minich, a second-year Doctor of Physical Therapy student; and Christian Abrigg, ‘24, appeared on the Modern Management of Older Adults podcast to discuss an innovative fall preparedness program aimed at helping older adults safely respond to falls and maintain independence.

The MMOA podcast, produced by the Institute of Clinical Excellence, focuses on evidence-based strategies to help rehabilitation and fitness professionals improve outcomes for older adults. The platform features discussions on geriatric care, current research and practical treatment approaches relevant to physical therapists, occupational therapists, assistants, students, new graduates, experienced clinicians, geriatricians and fitness professionals.

During the episode, the YSU team highlighted the importance of expanding traditional fall prevention efforts to include fall preparedness. This approach emphasizes teaching individuals how to reduce injury during a fall, safely get up from the floor and build confidence in managing potential fall situations.

The conversion also addressed the impact of fear of falling on quality of life and how targeted training and education can help older adults maintain independence and remain active.

The podcast appearance reflects ongoing collaboration between faculty, students and alumni at YSU, providing opportunities to contribute to national conversations in health care and rehabilitation while advancing innovative approaches to patient care.
