YSU Engineering department and Liberty Township collaboration nets six-figure grant

A collaboration between the Engineering department at YSU and Liberty Township has resulted in a six-figure grant for Little Squaw Creek Stream Renovation: Phase 2.

Robert J. Korenic, associate professor and program coordinator of the Civil and Construction Engineering Technology program, announced the grant totaling $200,000 has been awarded to the YSU CCET program in conjunction with Liberty Township and The Davey Resource Group.

The Ohio Public Works Commission, who allocates and manages the Clean Ohio Fund – Green Space Conservation Program, awarded the money.

The grant monies will allow approximately 15-18 students to analyze, design and construct an improved creek bed channel and riparian zone improvements at Little Squaw Creek in Liberty Park. They will also select both native and adaptive plants to be added to the riparian zone.

During spring semester 2022, engineering students in Korenic’s Hydraulics & Land Development course will be involved in various aspects of the field work and design using Little Squaw Creek as their class project.

"This hands-on project is beneficial to their engineering studies as it is problem/project based and allows them to work with community partners," stated Korenic.
