YSU celebrates Women's History Month
Youngstown State University’s Women’s and Gender Studies program offers a full slate of programs for Women’s History Month in March, including:
Friday, March 12, 6 p.m., “She Who Does Not Speak Does Not Sin”: The Failed Attempt at Silencing Female Voices in 16th Century Italy, presented via Zoom by Alyssa Falcone, the Ives Visiting Professor in the Humanities at YSU. Falcone will present works of literature written in the 16th Century that sought to erase and suppress the presence of women in famous Italian texts, such as Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron, for religious purposes. Tuesday, March 16, 6 p.m., “Healing Black Girls Pain: Stereotyping, Microaggressions, and Biases that Affect Black Girls and Women” presented via Zoom by Ashley Gilmore, a licensed clinical mental health counselor who runs Gilmore Counseling and Consulting, LLC. The presentation will address the specific pain that Black girls and women face in their lives and discuss tools to help them heal. Register here.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, March 23, 24 and 25, “Poetry/Spoken Word in Collaboration with John Jay College of Criminal Justice,” led by Crystal Endsley and Tony Keith Jr. A 3-day “Identity” themed workshop focused on writing and poetry/spoken word. More information here.
Tuesday, March 23, 6 p.m., Zoom, “Pandemics, Social Equity and COVID-19: Is There a Disproportionate Impact on Women?” presented by RaJade Berry-James, associate professor of public administration and resident faculty in the Center for Genetic Engineering & Society in the School of Public and International Affairs at North Caroline State University. Berry-James will use a social equity framework to discuss the impact the pandemic has had on women and gender norms in society. Register here.
Thursday, March 25, 6 p.m., virtual Women’s Hall of Fame event sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown. The event is free, but registration is necessary, online. The winner of the Tessier Writing Contest will also be recognized. The contest for undergraduate YSU students is sponsored by YSU Women’s and Gender Studies, Alpha Rho Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha and the LWV of Greater Youngstown.
