The Ohio Small Business Development Center Export Assistance Network at Youngstown State University has been recognized with the 2026 Program Excellence Award from NASBITE International, a leading authority in global business education and international trade credentialing.
The award honors outstanding and innovative programs that demonstrate excellence in international trade education, counseling and training. YSU’s Export Assistance Network is being recognized for its comprehensive approach to supporting businesses and developing future global trade professionals.
“This recognition highlights the impact of the SBDC and the Williamson College of Business Administration at YSU among regional universities,” said Mousa Kassis, director of the Export Assistance Network. “It reinforces to the business community that they are receiving premier services while also encouraging students to pursue careers in international business supported by WCBA.”
Established in 2012, the Export Assistance Network has grown from serving four counties to supporting businesses across 13 counties in Northeast Ohio, representing nearly 2 million residents. In the past year alone, the program assisted 104 companies with services ranging from export readiness assessments and market expansion strategies to compliance training and international documentation.
Exporting remains a critical driver of the regional economy, with approximately 15% of the region’s GDP tied to exported goods. Through its work, the program helps businesses expand into international markets, increase revenue and create jobs locally.
“Export assistance is essential for small businesses in Northeast Ohio looking to grow and remain competitive,” Kassis said. “By helping companies enter new markets, we are supporting long-term economic development across the region.”
The program is also deeply integrated into student learning. Through initiatives such as the Ohio Export Internship Program, students receive hands-on training in global trade practices and work directly with companies on real-world export challenges.
Since its launch, the program has helped prepare students for careers in international business while supporting workforce development needs across Ohio.
Mariah Hauser, international trade specialist, said the most rewarding aspect of the work is seeing tangible outcomes for businesses.
“The most rewarding part is seeing companies successfully enter new markets, expand their operations and create new employment opportunities,” she said.
In addition to direct business support, the Export Assistance Network has led regional and international initiatives, hosted trade delegations, produced research and publications and partnered with organizations across Ohio and beyond to strengthen global trade opportunities.
The award will be formally presented at the NASBITE International Annual Conference in St. Louis on April 1, 2026.
The recognition marks YSU’s first time receiving this national honor, highlighting the university’s growing leadership in international business education and its commitment to driving economic impact throughout the region.
