The Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University hosted its first Applied Learning & Employer Networking Luncheon on April 24, bringing together more than 100 students, faculty, staff and regional business professionals for an event focused on strengthening connections that support student career development and regional workforce needs.
Held in Williamson Hall, the luncheon highlighted the role of applied and engaged learning in preparing students for professional success while creating opportunities for meaningful interaction between students and employer partners.
The event was developed in collaboration with the WCBA Center for Career Management, the Dean’s Office and faculty, and was supported by the Lariccia Family Endowment, reflecting the college’s commitment to integrating academic learning with real-world experience.
Students in attendance represented a range of applied learning experiences, including internships, participation in regional and national business competitions, and community-engaged projects. These experiences play a central role in helping students build practical skills, professional confidence and a deeper understanding of their career paths.
“Applied and engaged learning is central to how we prepare students for professional success,” said Christina Saenger, dean of the Williamson College of Business Administration. “This luncheon reflects WCBA’s commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for students to connect their academic experiences with career pathways, while also strengthening the relationships between the college and the employers who support our students and our region.”
“This event was intentionally designed to bring together all of the people who contribute to our students’ professional development — our faculty and staff, our employer partners, and our students,” said Patrick J. Bateman, Lariccia Family Endowed Professor and director of the MBA program. “By creating space for these groups to connect, we strengthen not only the student experience, but also the relationships that support a strong and sustainable talent pipeline for our region.”
Employer partners emphasized the value of the event in creating new opportunities for connection beyond traditional recruiting channels.
“I think it's phenomenal. We’ve got to do it more often,” said Bill Vennetti, principal at Packer Thomas. “It’s a great experience not only for students, but also for employers to meet individuals they may not have come across through a typical process like internship interviews or campus recruiting.”
The luncheon reflects WCBA’s broader mission to support the professional development of its students and to ensure they are well prepared to contribute to the workforce needs of businesses and organizations throughout the region. By bringing together students, faculty and employer partners in a shared setting, the event reinforced the importance of collaboration in developing career-ready graduates and strengthening connections between YSU and the business community.
