The Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University and Junior Achievement of the Mahoning Valley host the 7th Annual JA Titan Business Challenge competition Thursday, March 10, on the YSU campus.
There will be a student and adult competition this year. The online student competition will take place in Williamson Hall at YSU from 9 to 11:30 a.m., followed with lunch, a keynote address from Dr. Betty Jo Licata, dean of the YSU Williamson College of Business Administration, and Brian Alls, co-founder of Bravura 3D, followed with the awards presentation. The adult competition and mixer will begin at 5:30 p.m. The adult competition will use the same online program used by the students.
Forty-teams of high school students from 16 schools across Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula counties will compete. Using JA Titan, an online business educational program, teams will have the opportunity to create, manage and operate their own virtual businesses while competing for scholarships ($500 for each student on 1st place team, $200 for 2nd place, and $100 for 3rd place). Additional prizes will also be awarded. In the past six years JA, has given away over $13,500 in scholarships and prizes to local students.
The competition is designed to unleash creativity, test leadership skills and demonstrate the competitive nature of the free enterprise system. Teams go head-to-head as they strive to make informed business decisions in running their own global, virtual business. Each team will be paired with a local business professional who will be their mentors for the first part of the competition. By pairing each team with local business professional, students are able to get insight on different opportunities in the Mahoning Valley and see how the principles they learn during the JA Titan Business Challenge are applicable in the real world.

This year’s participating high schools include: Austintown, Boardman, Bloomfield, Bristol, Canfield, Cardinal Mooney, Champion, Chaney, Columbiana Career and Technical Center, Howland, Hubbard, Lisbon, Lordstown, Lowellville, Pymatuning Valley, Southington and Valley Christian School.
