Dana School of Music jazz and flute concerts set for this week

Jazz and flutes are the order of the day for concerts Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 16 and 17, presented by the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University. Both concerts are free and open to the public. The YSU Jazz Ensembles perform 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16 in Kilcawley Center’s Chestnut Room on the YSU campus. The ensemble led by Dave Morgan will perform music by Jim Hall, Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker, and Marcus Miller. Kent Engelhardt’s ensemble will celebrate the centennial of composer/pianist Billy Strayhorn by performing “Impressions Of The Far East Suite.” The nine-movement suite, composed by Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington, is a musical impression of the Middle East and Far East where Ellington’s orchestra performed during a 1963 State Department tour. Representations include Syria, Persia, India, Jordan, Lebanon, Japan, and the Islamic religion. The YSU Flute Ensemble performs 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in Bliss Recital Hall on the YSU campus. The concert is free and open to the public. The 11 students in the YSU Flute Ensemble will perform a variety of selections, including Views from Falls House by Gary Schocker; Canzone for Flute and Piano by Samuel Barber and Rigadon from Le Tombeau de Couperin by Maurice Ravel, among others. Selections from Debussy, Godard and Ewazen will add to the repertoire. Parking is available in the Wick Avenue deck for a nominal fee.
