Business college student wins national HR scholarship

Taylor Demyan of Brooklyn, Ohio, a Human Resources major in the Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University, received the Libby Sartain Undergraduate Scholarship from the Society of Human Resource Management.

Demyan is secretary of the YSU Society for Human Resource Management, member of Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society, and YSU Business Leader working directly with the dean and faculty to support college initiatives.

She also attended the 2016 Ohio HR Conference and the 2016 Global Leadership Summit, and she recently completed two internships: a marketing research internship with the Youngstown Business Incubator and management intern with Family Video. She has been on both the Dean’s List and President’s List for high academic achievement.

"I'm very grateful to be one of the recipients of this award,” Demyan said. “SHRM was the reason I found a career path that utilized my strengths and could help me contribute to the development and growth of society. I am thankful that this organization has provided me with even more support to reach my goals.”

The $2,500 scholarship celebrates the many years of volunteer service given by Libby Sartain and her ongoing support for the next generation. Sartain started her relationship as a student officer with an undergraduate chapter of SHRM at Southern Methodist University. Throughout her 30+ year career in human resources, including heading up HR at both Southwest Airlines and Yahoo!, she remains active serving on the SHRM Foundation Board. The YSU SHRM Chapter is open to all students with an interest in human resource management, regardless of their major. The student chapter supports students in the newly structured, SHRM-certified curriculum by providing leadership and professional development opportunities and is supported by the Department of Management at the WCBA.
