Accounting prof wins national recognition for superior teaching

Marsha Huber, professor of Accounting at Youngstown State University, is the 2018 winner of the American Accounting Association/J. Michael and Mary Anne Cook/Deloitte Foundation Prize for teaching excellence in undergraduate accounting programs.

The award, the foremost recognition of an individual who consistently demonstrates the attributes of a superior teacher in the discipline of accounting, will be presented at the AAA’s annual meeting in August in Maryland.

The Cook Prize serves to recognize, inspire and motivate members to achieve the status of a superior teacher. “While we received numerous outstanding nominations, the Selection Committee enthusiastically agreed that you stood out amongst a list of outstanding teachers” said Nancy Bagranoff, dean of the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond and past president of AAA.

Huber is the recipient of several other education awards and recognitions including:

• YSU Distinguished Professor of Teaching (2014)
• Beta Alpha Psi “Professor of the Year (2013 and 2018)
• Interviewed about her teaching innovations for AICPA online publication Extra Credit
• Four national awards for contributions to accounting education: KPMG award for Mentoring (2013); George Krull/Grant Thornton Innovation in Education Award (2012) ; Canadian Accounting Education, Theall Innovation in Education Award (2011); Bea Sanders AICPA/AAA Innovation in Education Award (2010).

“Dr. Huber is a true accounting educator – innovative, committed to the teaching-learning process, and focused on making in difference in the lives of our students. We are incredibly proud of her accomplishments and we are fortunate to have her on our faculty,” said Betty Jo Licata, dean of the YSU Williamson College of Business Administration.

Huber’s research passion is to advance accounting education through the interdisciplinary application of positive psychology, neuroscience and educational theories. Her research has been published in Issues in Accounting Education, Journal of Accounting Education, Strategic Finance and CGMA Magazine.

Huber earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Ohio University, an MBA from Miami University, a master’s degree in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, a graduate certificate in Creative Studies from State University of New York College at Buffalo (2019), and a Ph.D. in Hospitality Management from Ohio State University. Huber served as a visiting faculty scholar at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education (2014). She was a professor at Otterbein University before joining the YSU faculty in 2010. She is also an active Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Global Management Accountant.
