The Office of Veterans Affairs is seeking a graduate student in SA/CC for Practicum/Internship experience during the 2026-2027 academic year. The student, supervised by the Associate Director of Veterans Affairs of Veterans Affairs, will work 24 hours/week when classes are in-session. Hours can be split with another department if needed.

 

Learning Outcomes

Through the experience in the Office of Veterans Affairs, the graduate student will be able to:

  • Understand the University’s policies and procedures
  • Learn why student veterans are an important population of the University and broader community
  • Explain the purpose and benefits of the Veterans Resource Center to student veterans and qualified dependents
  • Gain valuable experience working directly with student veterans.

 

Major Work Characteristics/Summary of Position

  • Meets weekly with supervisor to discuss goals and progress in the position
  • Intervenes with students who identify as academically challenged and updates database with actions taken to ensure student success and progression
  • Assists in the administration, operation, and maintenance of the YSU Veterans Resource Center; ensures excellent customer experience and a welcoming atmosphere that promotes inclusivity and collaboration
  • Monitors and positively impacts student veteran performance and progress; working knowledge and awareness of federal (VA), Department of Defense (DoD), and state education funding for military-connected students (training provided)
  • Aids student veterans applying for benefits
  • Assist in the maintenance of student records
  • Assists with and plans veteran-related events that take place on campus
  • Aids in transfer reviews and prior learning assessments for application of credits
  • Attends and participates in University functions on behalf of the office and division
  • Completes other duties and special projects as assigned
  • Assists with divisional program events as needed

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Demonstrated skill with both written and verbal communication

  • Commitment to working with students, staff, and faculty of diverse backgrounds
  • Collaborative approach to teamwork
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks
