EMERITUS STATUS

YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY RECOGNIZES FACULTY and STAFF, THROUGH NOMINATIONS BY THEIR PEERS, WHO DEMONSTRATE A DISTINGUISHED PROFESSIONAL CAREER AND AS HAVING MADE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE UNIVERSITY.

 

Procedures for Emeritus Status Recommendations FACULTY ONLY: 

A full time faculty member, who retires in good standing with ten or more years of service at YSU shall be eligible to apply for emeritus status within one year of retirement.

1. If a retired faculty member desires to apply for emeritus status they shall provide the department chair with a CV and a letter requesting emeritus status.  The letter should include a description of their contributions to the university and service to society beyond the university community.

2.. The Department Chair shall distribute the letter and CV and a secret ballot (defined in number 3 below) to all current full-time faculty members in the retiree's department within five (5) business days of receipt by the Department Chair. ​​​​

3. The Department Chair will create the secret ballot. The ballot shall include the following:
    a. date the request for emeritus status was received;
    b. the deadline for submission of the ballot; (All voting shall be complete within 30 days of the original request for emeritus status.)
    c. and instructions on where and how to return the ballot.

4. The Department Chair shall complete the Emeritus Nomination Form and submit the form to the Dean for approval, if the majority (50% + 1) of votes are in favor of the request.

5. If the Emeritus Nomination form is approved at all levels (Dean, Provost, President), the Office of Human Resources shall submit the nomination to the Board of Trustees at the next regularly scheduled Board of Trustees meeting. 

6.  Upon approval of the Board of Trustees, the retired faculty member shall be conferred with emeritus status at the subsequent spring meeting of the Board.

Procedures for Emeritus Status Recommendations STAFF ONLY: 
Nominees are evaluated on the following criteria:
  • Length of Service (typically totaling more than ten years);
  • Overall quality of that service;
  • Contribution to the University;
  • Service to society beyond the University community
Procedures for Emeritus Status Recommendations:
1. Department Chairperson or Department Head initiates the nomination of Emeritus-eligible retirees by completing section one of the new nomination form, includes support documentation.
2. Academic Dean/Executive Director completes section two (2) and forwards it to the Provost or Vice President.
3. Completed Emeritus Nomination forms must be submitted to Human Resources (benefits@ysu.edu) no later than 5pm on the deadline set forth below. 
4. The Office of Human Resources will secure the President’s recommendation and signature.
5. Forms/submissions received after the deadline may be forwarded to the President for review but will be held until the following year

Important dates for 2024 for staff:

  • Nominations may be submitted beginning March 1, 2024
  • Nominations must be returned to the Office of Human Resources by Monday April 8, 2024 by 5pm. 
    • Forms must have all appropriate signatures before being submitted to the Office of Human Resources. Forms that are not complete may be deferred to the following year for consideration.    
  • Youngstown State University Board of Trustees will review recommendations at the June 2024 board meeting
