Policy Statement

  • Youngstown state university does not discriminate on the basis of sex (including pregnancy), race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, disability, or veteran/military status or any other basis protected by law or Executive Order in its programs or activities.

 


 

What is Discrimination? 

Conduct that is based on an individual’s sex (including pregnancy), race, color, religion, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, disability, or veteran/military status or any other basis protected by law that:

  • Adversely affects condition of an individual’s employment, education,
  • or participation in a university activity or program; or
  • Is used as the basis for a decision affecting an individual’s employment, education or participation in a university activity or program; or
  • Is sufficiently severe or pervasive to a reasonable person that it substantially interferes with an individual’s employment or educational performance or creates an environment that is intimidating, hostile or abusive.

 

What is Harassment?

Conduct, or a course of conduct, that degrades or shows hostility toward an individual or group of individuals and is based on sex (including pregnancy), race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, disability, or veteran status or any other basis protected by law, and is sufficiently severe or pervasive to a reasonable person that it:

  • Unreasonably interferes with an individual’s employment or education; or
  • Objectively creates a working, living, or educational environment that is hostile, intimidating, or abusive. (frequency, nature, severity, relationship, location, context, etc.)

Other Reporting Options:

An individual also has the right to file a complaint with external agencies, including, but not limited to, the Ohio civil rights commission, the equal employment opportunity commission, and/or the department of education.
 

 


YSU Policy 3356-2-03(J) Non-Retaliation

University policy and state and federal law prohibit retaliation against an individual for reporting discrimination or harassment or for assisting or participating in an investigation. Persons who believe they are experiencing retaliation for reporting or participating in an investigation of a complaint are strongly encouraged to contact the office of equal opportunity, policy development and title IX.
