Our office provides career development services for current students and alumni with majors in the Cliffe College of Creative Arts, Beeghly College of Liberal Arts, Social Sciences & Education at Youngstown State University. Request an appointment with one of our staff members to help you prepare for that job interview, career fair, or grad school! The appointment types we offer are:
Resume and Cover Letter Review
- Review and analyze the content of your document. What to bring to your appointment: your current resume or cover letter.
- If this is for a job application, please bring a copy, or have access to the link/digital version of the position description.
- If this is for a class, please bring your professor’s requirements.
- Questions on how to start/write a resume or cover letter? Drop by our Career Corner for some individualized direction on how to build and format a resume or cover letter, or view our resume examples in the Job Finder’s Handbook
Mock Interview
- A practice run-through of a professional interview. You have the option to have the mock interview recorded if you wish, so you can review your answers. Some class assignments may require the mock interview to be recorded. However, if this is not the case, you may choose to not have the interview recorded. What to bring to your appointment: Your resume, a job or internship position description, or graduate school admission requirements. Please wear business casual attire to your mock interview

Interview Preparation
- Fine tune a few answers or questions you have about your interview, or interview etiquette. What to bring to your appointment: No documents required
Graduate School Advice
- Discuss your career goals as they relate to graduate programs. Compare various programs of interest, or receive feedback on application materials. What to bring to this appointment: Any goal statements, letters of intent, or assistantship application essays, as well any prompts for your documents
Plan your Job or Internship search
- Learn strategies, skills, and resources to help you search for your next job or internship. What to bring to this appointment: Nothing required

Looking to find that fulfilling and enjoyable career? Not sure how to go about finding it? Schedule a 60 minute self-assessment appointment with our Career Development Coordinator to learn about your preferences, strengths, interests, and values and how they relate to various industries and occupations! This appointment is available to any YSU student, regardless of your major.

Major Exploration
Not sure if your current major is the right fit? Schedule a Major exploration appointment to look at various YSU programs to see how your credits can fit into a different program, or find options to supplement your current program, such as minors, certificates, or graduate programs. This appointment is available for any current YSU student.

- Exploratory Academic Advising
If your major is Exploratory Undecided, or if you would like to change your major to Exploratory Undecided, then this is the place for you! You’ll need to meet with your advisor twice every semester to make sure you’re on track to fulfill your University General Education requirements, and also help you learn more about various majors here at YSU.
*Please note, if your major is listed as: Undecided/Undetermined STEM, BCLASSE, BCOE, WCBA or CCCA, you will need to meet with the academic advisor in that college.
Exploratory Advising Appointment
- In this appointment, you’ll discuss classes that will fulfill University requirements, while still exploring your interests and keeping you on track
- What to bring to this appointment: Any handouts completed in your Pre-Advising appointment
- Handshake
As a current YSU student or a graduate of YSU, you have access to Handshake, our office appointment scheduling tool and the job and internship posting board (Previously Penguin Link). Each of the employers that post positions on Handshake are reviewed and vetted by our staff, as well as the jobs or internships that they post. To access these opportunities, all you’ll need to do is log in to your Handshake account using your YSU credentials, and set up your profile. From there, you can not only access information about current position openings, but also schedule appointments with staff members in the Office of Career Exploration & Development, view information about upcoming events, upload resumes or other documents for feedback, or view our career development resources.
