Laboratory and Maker Space Safety

Youngstown State University recognizes its responsibility to protect and assure the health and safety of the students, employees and visitors to the campus. It is the responsibility of EHS to assure that the University meets all of its legal obligations as they pertain to health, safety, and the environment, and to assist faculty, staff & students in their efforts to comply with all regulatory agencies and provide a safe & healthy working environment.

Laboratories and maker spaces have different safety and health risks than other learning areas on campus. Therefore, individuals working in these spaces must have specific safety and health knowledge and awareness of these risks. This webpage will provide information for both laboratory and maker spaces on YSU campus properties. It is the expectation, and responsibility of those individuals to be familiar with, and follow the information provided.


General Safety and Health

Area Specific Safety and Health

Based on the activities, tools, equipment and materials used in the laboratories and maker spaces, specific safety and health rules and guidelines apply. It is expected that everyone working in these areas understand and follow these rules and guidelines.

Biology

The Biological Safety Program provides guidance to faculty, students, and staff working with biological materials. The program includes details on proper precautions, equipment, and facilities, that biohazardous materials can be handled without undue risk to themselves, their peers, their families, and the environment. Responsibility for maintaining related safety guidelines and coordinating the biological safety program is assigned to EHS.
