Youngstown State University (YSU) has officially announced the approval of its first slate of academic programs, beginning in Fall 2026, for Youngstown State University – Steubenville, the site of the former Eastern Gateway Community College (EGCC). This marks a significant milestone in the university’s commitment to expanding higher education access and workforce opportunity in the Upper Ohio Valley.
The newly approved offerings represent the first step in establishing a comprehensive YSU presence in Steubenville, focused on creating academic and career pathways aligned with regional workforce demand while building a full continuum of educational opportunities for students at every stage of their journey.

Together, these programs are intentionally designed to serve recent high school graduates, adult learners and working professionals seeking to upskill or reskill. Many of the associate degrees create seamless pathways into bachelor’s degree programs, reinforcing YSU’s commitment to long-term educational attainment and upward mobility in the region.
“This is an important first step in standing up a meaningful and sustainable YSU presence in Steubenville,” said YSU President Bill Johnson. “Our goal is not simply to offer classes, but to build opportunity, creating clear academic and career pathways that meet students where they are and preparing them for where they want to go. We are committed to delivering a full continuum of opportunities that strengthens the workforce and supports economic growth across the region.”
The selected programs reflect input from regional employers and community leaders, with a focus on high-demand fields including healthcare, advanced manufacturing, public safety, education, business and information technology.
“These programs are rooted in demonstrated workforce demand and designed with career readiness at the forefront,” said Provost Jennifer Adams. “From healthcare and skilled trades to education and public service, each degree and certificate prepares students with the practical skills and credentials needed to enter the workforce quickly or continue seamlessly into advanced study. We are building pathways that connect education directly to opportunity.”
The Steubenville initiative reflects YSU’s broader strategy to expand access, strengthen regional partnerships and align academic offerings with industry needs. University leaders emphasize that this initial program launch is just the beginning of a phased, strategic expansion that will continue to evolve in response to community and workforce priorities.
