Residence Hall Winter Break Check-Out Process

The following checklist should be completed prior to your departure for Winter Break. Please note that while you ARE required to turn in your room key, you are NOT required to move-out belongings at time of your departure for winter break, unless you have no intentions of returning for Spring semester. If you have already left and have no intention of returning until Spring semester, please contact housing@ysu.edu to let us know.

All residents must check out by 9pm on Friday, December 12th or 24 hours after their last final, whichever comes first, unless approval for winter break housing has been requested and granted.

  • Windows are closed and locked
  • No perishable food items left inside the room
  • All trash is bagged and taken to the outside dumpster
  • Your micro-fridge unit is completely emptied but still plugged in
  • Your room lights are turned off
  • Take home all valuables (YSU is not responsible for damage to personal items)
  • Your thermostat set to 70 degrees and low with no personal items or furniture blocking its immediate area (filters will be changed over winter break)
  • If there is currently a vacancy in your room, please ensure the space is prepared (clean and empty of your belongings) to welcome a new roommate
  • Housing staff will be doing checks of all half-filled rooms over break and reserves the right to move belongings in rooms that have not been adequately prepared by residents prior to winter check-out
  • Please officially “check out” by stopping by the front desk and notifying the staff member at the desk that you are leaving. You will be required to turn in your residence hall room key at this point.


If you do not intend to return for the Spring semester, or if you are unable to return due to academic or financial ineligibility, please complete the following items in addition to those listed above:

  • Your Housing contract spans the full academic year and release from your contract is not guaranteed. To request the contract termination form, please email housing@ysu.edu.
  • Notify your RA that you’ll be checking out and not returning for the Spring semester
  • Completely empty your room of all personal belongings. There should be nothing left that does not belong to YSU.
  • Please officially “check out” by stopping by the front desk and notifying the Desk Attendant you are moving out and not returning for the Spring semester. You will also need to surrender your room key at this time
     
    • NOTE: Failure to do this will result in a $55 key replacement fee

Need to request winter break housing? 

Please visit the Housing Contract Extension Request webpage to request an extension of your contract over the winter break period. Please note that break housing is not guaranteed and will incur a flat rate cost of $250 for the break period, regardless of length of stay. No meals are provided during this break. Overnight guests are not permitted during break housing.

Preparing for Spring 2026 Semester

Spring move-in occurs on Saturday, January 3rd, starting at 9:00am. In order to receive your residence hall room key to move-in or return for the Spring semester, you’ll need to complete the following:

  • Your Spring student account balance (housing AND tuition) must be paid in full or you must be re-enrolled in the University payment plan
  • You must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours (full-time) unless you have been granted an exemption by the Director of Housing
