As I reflect on the over 150-year history at the Dana School of Music and 60-year history of YSU’s University Theatre, I am humbled and inspired to contribute to the institutional pilr that the performing arts have had at Youngstown State University. It is amazing to experience the creative drive of our current artists and scholars, who are committed to artistic and pedagogical innovation, and have an intense focus on excellence at every level.
We have an unrivaled dedication to serve our students, alumni, and community. The Dana School of Music and University Theatre host well over one hundred and fifty performances, productions, and events each year. Our comprehensive music curricula are rooted in principles of musical relevance and application while our theatre curricula provide an immersive experience in all aspects of production including acting, singing, set and costume design, make up, and directing. Both the music and theatre areas focus on collaboration, community, and developing high artistic values.
Our alumni can be found throughout the arts and entertainment industry and teaching in classrooms worldwide. Whether it be on Broadway or the Metropolitan Opera, a symphony orchestra or a stadium rock concert, don’t be surprised to encounter our remarkable graduates. At the Dana Alumni Reception at the Ohio Music Educators Association Annual Conference, we continue to be reminded of the true impact that YSU music education graduates have on young lives throughout the region. We are a driving force in the future of the arts throughout Ohio and beyond.
I hope you enjoy learning more about our music and theatre programs at YSU. We look forward to the opportunity to meet you in person and discuss how YSU can help you achieve your artistic and professional goals.
With sincere gratitude,
Dr. Joseph Carucci, Director
