How to Register with Accessibility Services at YSU

Registration Process

Accessibility Services provides support to students with physical, medical, learning, hearing, visual and psychological disabilities. We work in conjunction with students and faculty in the process to establish accommodations, services, and access to academic programs. Our goal is to help students succeed by focusing on their abilities—not their disabilities.

We follow the laws outlined in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Amendments Act of 2008.

Step-by-Step: Getting Started with Accessibility Services

Registering with our office is a three-step process

Step 1: Submit Your Documentation

To receive accommodations, you may need to provide documentation of your disability.

You can:

  • View our documentation guidelines
  • Download the documentation form (for your doctor or provider to complete)

View documentation info and form

Step 2: Complete the Online Registration Form

Fill out the Accessibility Services Registration Form online. This gives us important background about your needs.

Complete the registration form

Step 3: Schedule a Registration Appointment

Once your form is submitted, you’ll meet with one of our Accessibility Coordinators.

During your meeting, we will:

  • Talk about how your disability impacts your academics
  • Discuss which accommodations can support you
  • Explain how to access and use your accommodations
  • Go over our policies and procedures
  • Share helpful campus resources

Each student receives individualized support based on their unique needs.

After You Register (Each Semester)

Once you’re registered with AS, here’s what to do at the start of every semester:

  1. 1. Request Your Accommodation Letters
    1. Ask us to send your Accommodation Letters to your professors.
      1. You can make this request starting one week before classes begin.
      2. Visit the Students Registered with Accessibility services page on our website for instructions
  2. 2. Talk with Your Professors
    1. After your letters are sent, you'll need to connect with your instructors.
    2. You can:
      1. Send an email
      2. Visit during office hours
      3. Schedule a meeting
    3. This helps your professors understand how to best support you in their class.
  3. 3. Schedule exams (If You Have Testing Accomodations)
    1. If you want to take your exams at Accessibility Services:
      1. Schedule at least 72 hours in advance
      2. This gives us time to reserve your seat and get the exam from your professor.
      3. Instructions for submitting a test request are on our website
    2. Need to schedule late?
      1. If  it's less than 72 hours before your test:
        1. Come to the AS office in person to schedule
        2. We'll do our best to get the exam in time, but we can't guarantee it on a short notice
