Petition for Academic Reinstatement

Students who have been academically suspended may petition the Academic Reinstatement Committee for reinstatement. A student may return to the university after Academic Suspension if granted reinstatement status.

Please note:

  • Academically suspended students must sit out at least one semester before petitioning for academic reinstatement.
  • If you have not attended YSU in the last three semesters, you must also apply for readmission before the required closing date for the semester.
  • Students should consult with the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships to determine financial aid eligibility.
  • Submitting a reinstatement form is not a guarantee of reinstatement to Youngstown State University and/or the program you wish to pursue.
  • Petitioners will be notified of the Committee’s decision.
  • The Committee’s decision is final.

Petitions for Spring 2025 reinstatement received after October 25 and on or before December 2 will be reviewed on December 6, 2024.

Students will be informed of the Committee’s decision within 2 weeks of the review date.

WHat to include in the petition

Petitions must include an explanation of the circumstances that led to suspension. If the explanation includes the negative impact of circumstances beyond the student’s control (significant illness, death of a family member, eviction, financial issues, etc), the student must provide official documentation to support their claim. Students who do not provide official documentation will have their petition denied. The student’s statement must also include the steps they will take if re-instated to ensure their academic success. Students should write a thoughtful and honest explanation

Students who are granted reinstatement will be given an academic recovery/continuation plan by the Academic Reinstatement Committee and will be required to discuss the plan with their academic advisor.  The plan may include a recommended change of major, academic reassessment, YSU summer term enrollment, repeating classes, tutoring, individual coaching, and/or mental health counseling.

When a student is granted reinstatement the student’s academic standing is reset to Probation.  All academic standing rules listed above apply for the term the student is reinstated. Therefore, a second suspension will have a duration of at least one full calendar year before reinstatement can be granted again. Students should not expect to be reinstated after two suspensions unless the Academic Reinstatement Committee believes that extraordinary conditions or circumstances have occurred. Additional suspensions will have a duration of at least two years.
