Did you know that a survey of 75,000+ college graduates "found that alumni who strongly agree that a professor 'cared about them as a person' are more engaged in their work, more emotionally attached to their alma mater, and experience higher levels of wellbeing" (Matson & Clark, 2020). Any of your students may need additional support over the course of a semester, but during Covid-19 and/or for students taking courses remotely, it may be particularly difficult for them to establish a caring relationship with a faculty and/or staff member and connect to support services on campus. Below are some resources that may help you connect your students to additional supports on campus.

If your students have general questions about records and registration, financial aid, or student billing. please direct them to contact the Penguin Service Center at 330-941-6000.

  • Academic Support for Students

    The YSU Early Alert Reporting System (EARS) allows you to connect students who may be struggling with campus resources and help them get on track to successfully complete the course. EARS alerts can go to many support offices on Campus, including the Center for Student Progress, the Writing Center, the Math Assistance Center, and more. Find out how to use EARS through this short training manual and/or video.

    You can identify if students are engaged in your course by checking if they have submitted assignments, you can also check in Blackboard to see if they are accessing the material. In Blackboard Original, go to the Full Grade Center (how to here) or in Blackboard Ultra see this guide to check student activity. It is powerful for a student to hear from their instructor that if they continue their current path, they will not be successful in the course. Encourage them to meet with you to discuss catch up options or to reach out for help from the Center for Student Progress.

  • Physical & Mental Health Support

    Introduction to Wellness Resources at YSU


    Food: The Penguin Pantry (food pantry) is available for free for student use. You can direct students to the Penguin Pantry website for updated hours and procedures for food pick-up.

    Medical: Wick Primary Care is available to meet YSU students’ basic health needs. Several services are offered for free (included in students’ health fee).

    Counseling: Student Counseling Services offers free short-term counseling for YSU students. These services are currently being offered by phone but check out this website for updated information and other resources. Dr. Ann Jaronski, Director of Student Counseling Services, facilitated a webinar in Spring 2020 titled Supporting Students Mental Health Remotely. Find out the value of asking, listening, acknowledging, supporting, challenging and connecting with your students – and your role and scope of care as an educator.   • How to Help a Student in Distress

    If you are unclear of how to support a student/what resources are available check out the following resources created by the Division of Student Experience:

    If one of your students communicates being a victim of sexual assault, stalking, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual exploitation, sexual harassment, sex/gender discrimination, pregnancy discrimination, or any related issue, you can use the Title IX Reporting Form or contact the Title IX office.

    If you have a student who is considering withdrawing from YSU, is overwhelmed by a family/personal situation, displays unhealthy patterns of behavior, or is hospitalized/experiencing serious illness, you can use the YSU Person of Concern Referral Form or contact Student Outreach and Support.
