YSU student teachers have multi-million dollar impact on region

More than 600 student teachers at Youngstown State University are placed in nearly three dozen school districts throughout the region and deliver an economic impact of close to $4 million a year, a new study says.

“This report shows that our teachers-in-training have a significant, multi-million dollar impact on the communities, the school districts and, most importantly, the children that they serve throughout the region,” said Charles Howell, dean of the Beeghly College of Education at YSU.

The analysis by the State University Education Deans shows that, during the 2016-17 academic year, 153 YSU teacher candidates completed student teaching assignments in local school districts. Each student teacher completed 560 hours of work in the schools. Student teaching is the capstone class for Education majors.

In addition, in preparation for their capstone student teaching, YSU teacher candidates completed a total of 1,800 other early field experiences in the schools, averaging 34 hours each.

So, overall, YSU teacher candidates completed nearly 147,000 hours of service in school districts in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Jefferson, Portage and Lakes counties in Ohio, as well as Mercer County in western Pennsylvania, during the 2016-17 school year.

Using school district median salaries, SUED calculated that YSU future teachers were responsible for an economic impact totaling $3.954 million for 2016-17.

Statewide, teacher candidates at all of Ohio’s 12 public universities served in 514 public school districts in all 88 counties in the Buckeye State in 2016-17, delivering an economic impact of $92.4 million.

The State University Education Deans is an association of deans from Ohio’s 13 public colleges of education. Its mission is to ensure high-quality candidates that are prepared for employment in schools, agencies and other professional settings. The association works with the Ohio Department of Education, the Ohio Department of Higher Education, Ohio’s private teacher preparation institutions, P–12 school districts and other educational entities, including the Ohio Legislature.

The YSU Beeghly College of Education consists of two departments - Teacher Preparation, and Counseling, School Psychology and Educational Leadership - and is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation and the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. The college offers bachelor’s degrees in 13 disciplines, as well as five master’s degrees and the doctorate in Educational Leadership.
