Youngstown State University launches Advanced Technology Workforce Accelerator

YSU STEM Workforce Education and Innovation Expands to Meet the Growing Demand for IT, OT, and Advanced Wireless Talent

Youngstown State University’s STEM Workforce Education and Innovation announces the rebranding and expansion of its IT Workforce Accelerator (ITWA) into the Advanced Technology Workforce Accelerator (ATWA). This transformation reflects YSU’s commitment to equipping the workforce with the critical skills needed at the intersection of information technology (IT), operational technology (OT), and advanced wireless networks—driving innovation, resilience, and economic growth in Northeast Ohio and beyond.

With the rapid evolution of Industry 4.0, the demand for a workforce trained in cybersecurity, 5G-enabled IoT, and automation systems is greater than ever. ATWA was created to bridge these gaps, ensuring that talent is prepared not just for today’s jobs, but for the future of work.

What Sets the Advanced Technology Workforce Accelerator Apart?

Unlike traditional workforce programs that focus exclusively on IT, manufacturing, or wireless technologies, YSU’s Advanced Technology Workforce Accelerator embraces the convergence of these fields. Through integrated training programs, industry-driven curriculum, and clear career pathways, ATWA fosters innovation and collaboration to equip learners with the hybrid skill sets demanded by today’s employers.

Key Pillars of the Advanced Technology Workforce Accelerator:

  1.  Integrated Training Programs – Covering IT fundamentals, OT processes, and advanced wireless systems, including IoT, industrial cybersecurity, cloud computing for manufacturing, and automation.
  2.  Industry-Driven Curriculum – Developed in collaboration with industry associations that work directly with employers to ensure hands-on, real-world training aligned with job market needs.
  3.  Pathways to Opportunity – Offering foundational bootcamps, certifications, and advanced courses to support career transitions, upskilling, and workforce entry.
  4.  Innovation & Collaboration – Bringing together educators, industry leaders, and technology pioneers to drive workforce solutions that anticipate future industry demands.
  5.  Community & Economic Impact – Strengthening the local and state economy by providing employers with a skilled workforce and creating sustainable career opportunities.
  6.  Bridged Workforce Initiatives – Working in coordination with YSU’s Excellence Training Center (ETC) to enhance hands-on learning and expand access to state-of-the-art facilities.
  7.  Continued Collaborative Partnerships – Maintaining and expanding partnerships with the Wireless Infrastructure Association (WIA), the National Center for Urban Solutions (NCUS), and regional employers such as Tri-County Tower, ensuring direct pathways to employment and ongoing workforce development opportunities.
  8.  New Industry Partnerships – Including YSU’s recently announced partnership with the Fiber Broadband Association (FBA) to offer the OpTIC Path program, expanding broadband workforce training opportunities.

A Vision for the Future

“The Advanced Technology Workforce Accelerator is more than a training center—it’s a workforce transformation initiative designed to ensure Ohio remains at the forefront of digital infrastructure and Industry 4.0,” said Lindsey Ekstrand, Director of Workforce Education Programs at YSU. “Through innovation and collaboration and by embracing the integration of IT, OT, and advanced wireless technologies, we are preparing workers for high-demand careers that drive economic growth and technological advancement.”

YSU’s ATWA will continue working alongside industry leaders, regional employers, and state workforce initiatives to develop programs that align with emerging technology trends and labor market demands.
