WCBA seeks organizations for internship program

Non-profit and public sector organizations interested in receiving a full-time intern for summer 2019 are encouraged to apply to participate in the 2019 Nonprofit Leadership Summer Honors Internship Program at Youngstown State University.

Application deadline is Friday, Feb. 1. Applications are available by contacting Laura Dewberry, director, YSU Center for Nonprofit Leadership, at LJDewberry@ysu.edu or 330-941-1870.

The program, funded through a grant from the Raymond John Wean Foundation, provides full-time, 12-week summer internships to 10 qualified YSU students with career-related work experience in a nonprofit or public sector organization. The internships run May 20 through Aug. 9, and students earn a minimum of $12 an hour. The internships are co-funded by the participating organizations at about 20 percent of the total cost. On a weekly rotation, each organization hosts a site visit, tour and professional development seminar for participating students.

Participating nonprofit organizations must be in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties.

The Nonprofit Leadership Summer Honors Internship Program was also implemented in the summers of 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017, with 44 YSU student participants to date and 21,120 internship hours served.

“The Foundation enthusiastically partners with the university to provide a program that serves as a college retention/graduation strategy for students and capacity building for organizations. We see it as a win-win,” said Jennifer Roller, president of the Wean Foundation.

Students interested in the program can begin to apply in mid-February. Only YSU students with a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average and a declared major are eligible to apply. Participating students must be either seniors or graduate students by summer. Students selected the program receive a scholarship to fund the required one credit hour summer seminar and are also eligible to register for three hours of internship credit.
