This Graduate Assistant Intern (GAI) will serve as a Graduate House Coordinator, responsible for oversight and management of daily operations for two of our smaller residential communities within the residence hall zone. The GAI House Coordinator will enhance the living environment of the residential community through resident outreach, staff development, and engaging student programming. This is a live-in position and requires the GAI to live on campus within the residential community in a fully-furnished apartment provided by the college; a meal plan is also provided. Includes significant evening and weekend responsibilities.

Specific areas of responsibility may include, but are not limited to:

  • Builds and supports the assigned residential community through regular and effective communication with residents.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates resident assistant and student staff.
  • Works in conjunction with the RA and residential education staff to develop creative and engaging social and educational programs that enhance the residential experience, teach life skills, and support and foster student and academic success.
  • Provides oversight of the RA programming model to ensure that quality social and educational programs are occurring. Performs assessment, planning, and evaluation of all RA programming.
  • Serves as an official representative of Housing & Residence Life for communications, updates and to provide support for initiatives that directly support the success of the Cliffe Living Learning Community
  • Assists individuals and groups with problems and concerns and mediates discussions to resolve conflict. Maintains familiarity with community and campus resources and utilizes them to refer problems beyond the scope and experience of the Housing and Residence Life team.
  • Ensures residential community’s observance of housing policies as outlined in the student handbook and Student Code of Conduct.
  • Maintains room assignment records, oversees and communicates room changes, maintains student information, inventory information, etc. Uses StarRez and Roompact software. Opens and closes residence hall(s) as needed.
  • Collaborates with campus partners, including but not limited to CARES team, maintenance, custodial, food service, and campus police personnel.
  • Works in conjunction with the Housing Operations Assistant to report, track, and follow up on facility concerns to ensure timely and appropriate resolution. Performs weekly building walk-throughs to ensure building safety, security, and upkeep.
  • Coordinates all aspects of designated departmental and divisional collateral projects as assigned.
  • Required to provide on-call duty coverage to address safety and security concerns in campus housing.
  • Handles emergency or crisis situations according to Housing and Residence Life and campus policy as they arise and applies conflict resolution skills where appropriate.

Additional areas of responsibility include:

  • Assist with the vision and creation of departmental marketing
  • Attend professional staff meetings as requested
  • Represent Housing at large scale recruitment events (such as Penguin Preview Days, Experience Y Days and Orientation dates)

    
SUPERVISION:  Reports directly to the Housing Coordinator for Kilcawley, Wick & Weller Houses

DATES:  This posting is currently a one-year appointment only, with possible second year extension.  Preferred start date in early August to be present to assist in coordination of RA staff training, Welcome Week and Fall program planning.  Availability over Winter Break to assist with duty rotation and Spring training efforts is also preferred (any work during non-academic/non-stipend periods would be compensated with an hourly rate of pay at $12/hr).  Summer student employment may be available and is dependent on department’s needs.

HOURS:  20 hours a week

COMPENSATION:  Furnished apartment and meal plan, tuition remission and a $7,500 stipend during the academic year (paid in bi-monthly increments)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s Degree, full-time enrollment in a graduate program at YSU.  Experience in Housing & Residence Life as an undergraduate and/or experience with educational programming or philanthropic services preferred.
