We're looking for a Graduate Assistant Intern for Residential Education in Housing & Residence Life

We're a smaller staff of young(ish) professionals who are looking for someone reliable, hardworking, energetic, and most importantly, fun, to join our tribe! The position title may seem a little generic, but trust and believe, this position is quite the opposite. The Graduate Assistant Intern (GAI) for Residential Education works in partnership with departmental leadership to plan and implement social and educational programs to ensure that students receive an enhanced and all-encompassing residential experience.  This individual must be enthusiastic and passionate about programming and remain abreast on global affairs and issues to remain proactive and impactful in their programming approach and educational focus.

If you were one of our amazing GAIs, here are some areas you would make an important impact in:

  • Plan and implement residence life programs designed to foster student development and enhance community by featuring social and educational programs that focus on diversity and identity, alcohol and drug education, wellness and sex education, fiscal management, conflict resolution, and self-advocacy.

  • Coordinates and supports development of events and programs in a thorough manner during all stages, including:

    • Brainstorming and planning in a way that considers global issues, student needs and includes departmental feedback

    • Planning and coordination of resources that may include collaboration with other university stakeholders and student groups

    • Marketing and advertisement of programs in a creative and timely manner

    • Logistical set up, day of event support and supervision of student staff teams

    • Post-program assessment

  • Works in collaboration with academic colleges and University stakeholders to support special student populations (such as international students, student-athletes and students in the Honors College) and housing initiatives such as Living Learning Communities and theme housing initiatives, to ensure that the experience provided to students with this membership is meaningful.

  • May assist in planning and presenting educational content at Fall and Winter RA Trainings and ongoing RA seminars/in-services throughout the academic year, to support the ongoing training and development of undergraduate student staff

  • Serve as a liaison between Housing & Residence Life and other campus agencies to facilitate collaborative programming and education

  • Regularly attend meetings to become familiar with students involved in Residence Hall Association and collaborate in planning student programs

  • Assist with on-call duties for residential community's maintenance/emergency needs.

Additional areas of impact include:

  • Attend professional and paraprofessional staff meetings as requested

  • Represent Housing at large scale recruitment events (such as Penguin Preview Days, Experience Y Days and Orientation dates)

  • Assist in the completion of larger H&RL programs such as (but not limited to) Welcome Week, Family Day/Weekend and Midnight Breakfast.

This appointment could start as early as May but no later than mid-August depending on your student enrollment status. If we end up loving the way you contribute to our team, this appointment would be renewable for a second year.  Availability over Winter Break to assist with Spring programming and Spring training efforts is also preferred (any work during non-academic/non-stipend periods would be compensated with an hourly rate of pay at $12/hr).  Summer student employment may be available and is dependent on the department’s needs.

Hours: 20-25 hours a week (may include some weekends/evenings)

Supervision: Reports directly to Associate Director for Residence Life

 

Oh, and did we mention the COMPENSATION!

The selected applicant will receive full tuition remission and a $7,500 stipend throughout the Fall and Spring semesters (paid in bi-monthly increments), a one-bedroom apartment on campus housing (rent-free), and a full meal plan.  

During any summer sessions that the selected applicant works, they will receive $12/hour for up to 25 hours/week (20 hours if you are an international student), their one-bedroom apartment (rent free) and a summer meal plan, in lieu of tuition remission and stipend

Due to the unique focus of this role on residential programming and events for residential students, qualified applicants must be willing and able to work evening and weekend hours. Please check your program’s requirements and class schedule to see if you will have availability during these times.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree, full-time enrollment in a graduate program at YSU.  Preferred experience in Housing & Residence Life as an undergraduate and/or experience with educational programming or philanthropic services.
