Position Title: Community Recreation Graduate Associate

Position Description:

  •  Assists in organizing, coordinating schedules and substitute requests, associated staff training, and policy/procedure monitoring for the Department of Campus Recreation.
  • Assists in organizing and coordinating schedules and substitute requests, associated staff training, and policy/procedure monitoring.
  • Assist with all large-scale programs, including but not limited to Welcome Week programs, NIRSA programs, Relaxation Week programs, health fairs, and community outreach programs.
  • Promote a healthy and holistic wellness atmosphere in the community. These efforts are directed toward creating, mobilizing, and sustaining upstreaming practices and policies that support a holistic view of health and foster university-wide well-being. 
  • Candidates must also adhere to daily office hours, hours subject to change based on events, assist with the front office as needed, and perform other duties as assigned. 
  • Assists with project and program assessment and evaluations with the logistical organization and coordination of special events and workshops. 
  • The candidate's additional duties include teaching group fitness classes, personal training, and collaboration with the Department of Campus Recreation’s IM and Club Sports staff and coordinator

Healthy Community Partnership Mahoning Valley Duties:

  • Facilitates and builds relationships between YSU/YSU Campus Rec and community partners interested in recreation/health/wellness activities. 
  • Coordinates with Healthy Community Partnership (HCP) Parks and Greenspaces Action Teams to develop, implement, and evaluate programming/events/activities that promote the physical and mental health benefits of recreation. 
  • Coordinates with HCP Parks and Greenspaces Action Team to launch and evaluate the Mahoning Valley Outside 365 Campaign.
  • Participates in HCP Parks and Greenspaces Action Team meetings. Coordinates with the HCP Communications Team to develop and share promotional materials for activities/events. 
  • Participates in the Community Health Assessment and Community Health Improvement planning and implementation process. Submits final organizational report evaluating YSU Campus Rec/HCP partnership progress, challenges, and opportunities. The candidate will also utilize park areas such as Wean, Packard, Perkins, Wick, and Lincoln Park to promote outdoor fitness, recreation activities, and wellness-based 
    programming.

Minimum Requirements:

Applicants must have applied for his/her academic program or be a current Youngstown 
State Graduate student for interview consideration; must be accepted into program before 
graduate assistantship offer can be made by Campus Recreation; must maintain good 
standing within his/her program, maintain a minimum of 9 credit hours of coursework, 
must be or willing to be certified in CPR/First Aid, possess prior Campus Recreation or 
related experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong written and communication skills. Strong ability to organize and coordinate 
simultaneous projects. Must be willing to be certified in Group Exercise or Personal 
Training from a nationally recognized fitness organization.

This position is similar to the Graduate Assistant Intern position offered by the College of Graduate Studies. This position is scholarship based, and the department agrees to follow those guidelines and conditions set forth by the College of Graduate Studies. However, these GAI’s are not given a stipend but instead paid an hourly rate and required to work up to 25 hours per week (5 additional hours if approved by the Dean of Graduate Studies), including exam week, for duties to be assigned by the department. Students will be paid $13 an hour in semi-weekly installments from the actual start date. This compensation may be subject to taxation. Students may not start working until all employment forms are on file. To remain eligible for this appointment, students must discharge their duties satisfactorily and remain in good standing. A student must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0-point scale for all graduate coursework. Students cannot hold other full-time employment but may accept occasional or temporary employment during the term of the assistantship subject to the approval of the department. International Graduate Students under this plan can only work 20 hours a week, no exceptions.
