Transition to Remote Instruction

We have highlighted a few important topics to assist in moving your course online for the remainder of the semester. For more advanced support, please check out the ACT website or book a consultation with an ACT member.

  • Creating Announcements

Announcements are an ideal way to post time-sensitive information critical to course success. It is important to communicate with your students consistently so they are aware of course expecations. Add announcements for these types of course activities:

    • Due dates for assignments and projects
    • Changes to your syllabus or schedule
    • Corrections/clarifications of materials
    • Exam schedules

Watch these videos on how to create an announcement in Blackboard Original and Ultra.

  • Creating Assignments

In order to keep students engaged and provide them with the opportunity to process their learning, assignments are necessary. A Blackboard assignment is an assessment tools that allows you to collect, grade, and return student submissions. The assignment files are only shared between the individual student and the instructor. Blackboard provides a consistent platform for students to find, submit, and view feedback on their work. This is an efficient way to collect and grade assignments when outside of a face to face classroom environment without using a variety of other communication tools.

  • Creating Tests

Creating a test in Blackboard is easy and maintains consistency for students who are completing all other coursework remotely. Watch these videos on how to create a test in Original and Ultra. You may also reach out to YSU's Department of Cyberlearning for assistance with creating a test. Call 330-941-3244 or email iddc@ysu.edu.

Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor can be combined to create a more secure test taking experience in Blackboard. Watch this video for an introduction to Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor and then learn how to prepare a Blackboard test for Respondus. NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you administer a required practice test ahead of your first graded test date. This will help to resolve the majority of technical issues and anxiety which can arise during a student's first expereince with proctoring software.

  • Lecturing through Zoom or Webex

YSU supports two major videoconferencing tools which can be used to hold a synchronous class, record lectures, or hold remote office hours.

You may also choose to attend a live training on one of these platforms by registering through YSU's training and development page.
