Service Members are directed to speak to their Education Services Officer (ESO) or counselor within their Military Service prior to enrolling at YSU.
Tuition Assistance Program funds are awarded to students under the assumption that the student will attend school for the entire period for which the assistance is awarded. When a student withdraws, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of Tuition Assistance funds originally awarded.
To comply with the Department of Defense policy, Youngstown State University will return any unearned Tuition Assistance funds on a prorated basis through at least the 60% portion of the period for which the funds were provided. Tuition Assistance funds are earned proportionally during an enrollment period, with unearned funds returned based upon when a student stops attending.
Calculation
The following formula will be used to calculate the return of unearned Tuition Assistance funds:
Number of days attended divided by the total days in the course = % Earned
(Total days in course excludes any official break of 5 or more consecutive days)
Return of Funds
Using the formula above, Youngstown State University will be required to return some, or all of the Tuition Assistance funds awarded to service members depending on % Earned.
If the % Earned is greater than 60%, the Tuition Assistance funds for that course are considered 100% earned.
If the % Earned is 60% or less, the Tuition Assistance funds would be reduced by the unearned percentage; possibly creating a balance on your Youngstown State University student account.
