Queering the Industry: Redefining Auto Culture with Mechanic Shop Femme
Monday, March 17 | 6:00PM-8:00PM | Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor (Steel Museum)
Chaya Milchtein is an automotive educator, writer, and the founder of Mechanic Shop Femme, a website dedicated to helping people understand their cars. The website sheds light on automotive issues, from buying and selling – another area fraught with anxiety for many folks – to actively maintaining them. Her mission is to demystify cars for people who don’t do their own repair work or even really want to do that work. She makes it clear that folks, especially women and the queer community, don’t have to know how to take a car apart and put it back together in order to be comfortable, if not empowered, when dealing with the automotive industry. In this keynote speech for Women’s History Month, Chaya will address how she challenges the norms of the automotive industry to pave the way for a more inclusive future, fostering equity and safety for marginalized people. Books will be provided for sale and a book signing will follow.

Outdoor Experiences - Guest Speaker

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? -Mary Oliver
Scot Loveland has spent most of his adult life seeking the answer to that one simple question in both his professional and personal life. A Russian Linguist for the Army and federal government; an undercover narcotics agent; a high school teacher; Director of Operations for multiple commercial entities; an armed/unarmed defense instructor for both law enforcement and Special Operations Command; a writer for multiple magazines; a whitewater kayaking instructor; Scot’s career path is as meandering as it is adventure-filled. Currently, Scot is the Director of the Ohio APEX Accelerator located in the Williamson College of Business Administration at YSU.
When not pursuing the road less traveled professionally, Scot pursues unique physical and mental challenges to include 25hr endurance events, Ironman triathlons, and 100mi trail races despite being both too old and too untalented for such foolishness. He is working on a book detailing his adventures and will share some excerpts during his photo presentation. As his greatest desire in the world is simply to help others be just a little bit better today than they were yesterday, he hopes you come away from this presentation with a renewed sense of self-motivation.
