Pets on Campus

POLICY REGARDING ANIMALS ON THE CAMPUS OF
YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY

No animals will be permitted in any building on the campus of Youngstown State University. The only exceptions to this policy will be:

  1. Those animals that are specifically trained to aid individuals with physical impairments. Physically impaired individuals who bring these animals to campus must register their animals with the Department of Disability Services. Registration will consist of providing the department with a description of the animal and the owner (i.e., a copy of the seeing-eye dog identification card or any other form of identification). Animals must be registered initially and at the beginning of each academic year thereafter. It is the owner’s responsibility to assure these animals are properly cared for and have all of the necessary licenses and inoculations pertinent to that type of animal. The individual must be able to show proof of inoculations and/or licensing (if required by law) when the animal is registered. It is understood that the owner of the animal, not the University, assumes full liability for the animal and for any and all damages (personal, property and other) caused by the animal.

  2. Animals used for research or classroom demonstrations are permitted only in those facilities and laboratories specifically designed to house that specific animal.

  3. Aquariums will be permitted in offices provided they are cleaned and properly maintained and present no violations to electrical, fire and building codes. Approval must be obtained from the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety prior to setting up the aquarium.

Only those animals not prohibited by local or state law to be kept as pets and not prohibited by local or state law to be taken onto public walkways will be permitted on the grounds of Youngstown State University. These animals shall be on a leash or some other restraining device and at all times the owner shall be in control of the animal. No animal on the grounds of Youngstown State University shall be left unattended by the owner. The owner of the animal is responsible for clean up and proper disposal of animal waste. Animals will never be tied to trees, poles or other structures for the purpose of restraining the animal. All animals must be properly licensed if required and shall have received the proper inoculations. It is understood that the owner of the animal, and not the University, assumes full liability for any and all damages (personal, property and other) caused by the animal.

Any violation of this policy will result in the removal of the animal from the campus by the Mahoning County Dog Warden or other appropriate agency at the expense of the owner of the animal.

The Youngstown State University Police Department in conjunction with the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety will be responsible for enforcing this policy.
