Nicole Kent-Strollo, Ed.D., M.S.N., A.P.R.N.

Dr. Kent-Strollo received her Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership with a focus in Student Personnel Services from the University of the Cumberlands, a Master of Science degree in Nursing/Women's Health Nurse Practitioner Program from Kent State University, and Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Youngstown State University. A board-certified Nurse Practitioner and former member of the faculty in YSU's Department of Nursing, she also developed and directed YSU's Office of Student Outreach & Support, and served in several capacities within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. In her current role as Dean of Students and Ombudsperson, Dr. Kent-Strollo provides oversight to the YSU CARE Team, Student Counseling Services, Community Standards & Student Conduct, and Student Advocacy & Support. Additionally, she serves as the primary liaison to critical campus partners, including Compass Family and Community Services (Rape Crisis and Sojourner House). A lifelong Penguin, Dr. Kent-Strollo is passionate about helping students, while fostering a culture of respect across our campus community.


Erin Hungerman, M.S.
Assistant Dean of Students for Community Standards, Advocacy, and Conduct

As a function of her position, Erin primarily oversees the Office of Community Standards & Student Conduct but also serves as co-chair of YSU’s CARE Team and assists with student advocacy efforts in the Office of the Dean of Students. Before her current role, she served as the Director of Residence Life and University Conduct Officer at YSU. Previously, she worked in Residence Life as an Assistant Director at the University of Wyoming and a Residence Director at Colorado State University and served as Coordinator for Student Conduct and Community Standards at The University of Toledo. She has a Master of Science degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education from Colorado State University, graduate certificates in Campus Crisis Management (Colorado State University) and Higher Education Compliance (The University of Toledo College of Law), and a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary English Education (Bowling Green State University). In her free time, Erin enjoys board games, pub trivia, visiting her nephews, cheering for the Cleveland Cavs, and spending time with her partner and her dog, Marston.

Samantha Shaffer, J.D.
Coordinator, Community Standards & Student Conduct

Samantha became a Penguin in June 2020, after completing her law degree at Wake Forest University. Samantha’s journey in student affairs began when she worked as a Resident Assistant at Ithaca College. After graduating with her Bachelor’s degree in 2016, Samantha briefly worked as an Interim Residence Director before moving to North Carolina to pursue her law degree. Samantha’s interest in student affairs led her to become a Graduate Assistant for Student Conduct and eventually, a Student Conduct Coordinator in Wake Forest’s Office of the Dean of Students. Samantha enjoys spending her free time reading, playing video games, and hiking. She is excited to continue working with students and helping to promote an equitable, safe, and supportive campus environment.

Ann Tierney Jaronski, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist

Dr. Jaronski received her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from The Ohio State University in 1994. She has worked in collegiate mental health at three other universities (East Tennessee State University, University of Florida, and University of South Florida) before returning to Ohio and Youngstown State University in March 2016. Dr. Jaronski has professional interests in the administration of college mental health services, brief psychotherapy, anxiety disorders, stress and adjustment of college students, sexual assault education and prevention, working with diverse populations, and supervision and training of graduate students in mental health professions. She is also involved in providing outreach services regarding the emotional health of college students and consultation services for those who are concerned about the well-being of college students. Dr. Jaronski is a member of the Association of University and College Counseling Center Directors and the Ohio Psychological Association. At YSU, she is a member of the university's CARE Team.

Anne Lally, M.S.Ed., LSW, LPCC-S

Anne received a Master’s degree in Clinical Counseling and Student Affairs in 1996 and a Master's degree in School Counseling in 2003, both from Youngstown State University. Anne is a member of the Association of College Clinical Directors and the American Counseling Association. She is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for our students. In the greater community, Anne currently serves as Chair of the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board, of which she has been a board member since 2006. She has also served on both the Boys & Girls Club Advisory Board (2004-2006) and the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board (2004-2008).

Clinical Counselor, Student Counseling Services

Katie received her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Kent State University in 2016 and has been practicing as a Licensed Counselor since. She previously worked in an adolescent residential facility and as a school-based therapist at a K-12 school district. Her professional interests include anxiety disorders, providing therapeutic/psychoeducational groups, managing stress, working with diverse populations, and adjustment of college students. Her overall goal is to be a supportive, listening ear to students, helping to motivate them, and increase their overall well-being. She hopes to create a safe place where students feel comfortable when they need it.

Business Operations Specialist, Student Counseling Services

Michael is originally from Des Moines, IA. He moved to Youngstown when he received an honorable discharge from active duty in the United States Air Force and he joined the USAF active reserves. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Physical Education from YSU in 1991, but has worked at the University as a student, faculty, or staff member since 1981, including several positions within Campus Recreation and Kilcawley Center. In his current role, he provides confidential administrative support to Student Counseling Services as the initial point of contact to students and guests. He assists in the screening process by determining visitor needs, answering questions and addressing immediate issues of concern, scheduling appointments with counselors, managing phone inquiries, and taking detailed messages.

Jacob attended Ohio University, where he received both a Bachelor's degree in Specialized Studies in Multicultural Student Inclusion (2017) and a Master's degree in College Student Personnel (2019). Before joining the Office of the Dean of Students, Jacob worked in Housing & Residence Life and First-Year Experience. He is extremely passionate about helping students learn how to advocate for themselves during their time in college. In his free time, Jacob loves playing board games and enjoying drinks from Starbucks.

Stephanie is a two-time alumna of Youngstown State University earning her Master of Science in Education in Counseling with a focus in Student Affairs in 2018 and her Bachelor of Arts in General Studies in 2015. Before coming to the Office of the Dean of Students, Stephanie worked in Housing & Residence Life as a Housing Coordinator overseeing Kilcawley, Wick, and Weller House. Stephanie has a passion for helping students become engaged and involved on campus and fostering their sense of belonging. In Stephanie's free time she loves to golf, spend time with family and friends, make home improvements to the new house she bought, and give lots of cuddles to her dog Jack!

Meredith attended Mercyhurst University, where she was a student-athlete. She received a dual Bachelor of Arts degree in Sports Business and Marketing. She is currently on-track to receive a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Meredith is passionate about helping student-athletes receive the proper mental health resources necessary to perform to the best of their ability. She loves her dog, traveling, and attending sporting events.

Lorraine is an administrative professional with over fifteen years of experience. Her background includes working in the fields of non-profit, for-profit, and higher education, and has focused on the areas of Office Management, Marketing, and Human Resources. Lorraine has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Life Science from Otterbein University and earned her SHRM-CP certification in 2016.
